FDA and CDC Working Hard to Identify Substance Leading to Respiratory Illnesses

FDA and CDC Working Hard to Identify Substance Leading to Respiratory Illnesses”

U.S. health officials are urging Americans to stop vaping while they investigate at least five deaths and over 450 cases of a serious lung illness which has cropped up in otherwise "healthy young people" who vape in over 33 states.

Severe pulmonary disease related to vaping has taken another casualty in the United States, bringing the total death up to three.

They also believe that the "lung illnesses are likely associated with a chemical exposure", Meaney-Delman said. As a result, the FDA issued a warning in July 2009 on the health risks posed by vaping and, like the WHO, called for clinical studies to help determine whether e-cigarettes are safe for their intended use. So far, it has been learned that numerous tested samples as part of the investigations contained tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC, a psychoactive component of the marijuana plant).

For that reason, doctors and health officials are continuing to suggest people stay away from all vaping products until the investigation establishes exactly what is at the root of the illnesses. Whether the oils in the lungs came from the e-cigarettes, the body, or somewhere else entirely, is up for debate. Unturned in following any potential leads, including Vitamin E acetate found in numerous samples containing THC and they are committed to taking appropriate measures as the facts are confirmed.

"I had fat particles growing inside my lungs that were related to the glycerin in vape juice", Nelson said.

Health officials in some states said a number of people who got sick had vaped products containing THC. Ruth Lynfield says the patient, who is over 65 years old, died last month after a long and complicated hospitalization for a severe lung injury that progressed to include other conditions. Some used e-cigarettes with only nicotine, while others primarily used marijuana-based products. Federal, state, and local officials are scrambling to find a common element linking all of these cases, potentially being an ingredient or a contaminant. Health official on Friday have urged people to stop vaping until there is clear conclusion of this investigation.

While numerous patients, but not all, reported recent use of THC-containing products, some reported using both THC and nicotine-containing products while a smaller group reported using nicotine only.

That's a critical distinction in the OR case, according to the American Vaping Association, which blamed the recent spate of lung illnesses on illegal vape pens that contain THC.

"On Thursday, state officials who were on an informational FDA call told The Washington Post that they identified a vitamin E oil-derivative in cannabis e-liquids that had been used by people with vaping-related lung illnesses".
