Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison: Greta Thunberg Was Used to Arouse Fear

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison: Greta Thunberg Was Used to Arouse Fear”

"I always like kids to be kids - we can't have them sort of growing up as mushrooms either", Mr Morrison said.

He intends to use his address to the United Nations on Wednesday to focus on practical environmental measures, such as plastics recycling.

"I think there's a lot of disinformation out there about, frankly, what Australia is doing", he told reporters in NY overnight.

'Where do they get their information from?

He said the country was committed to its target of cutting emissions by 26-28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, describing that as a "credible, fair, responsible and achievable contribution". Who knows? Maybe they read it, maybe they read it.

"Australia's got nothing to apologise for".

However, he also revealed he received many letters from children concerned about their future - adding that he welcomed "their passion, especially when it comes to the environment".

He continued: "Above all, we must let our children, be children, let our kids be kids - let our teenagers be teenagers - while we do the work positively together to deliver the practical solutions for them and their future".

"We must respect and harness the passion and aspiration of our younger generations, rather than allow others to compound or, worse, facelessly exploit their anxiety for their own agendas", Morrison said, without providing evidence, echoing the sentiments of some particularly suspicious Australian columnists.

I don't know about you, but claiming that genuine critics are purposefully ignoring facts sounds an terrible lot like Trump accusing journalists of fake news when they called him out for bullshitting.

Scott Morrison with Donald Trump and Anthony Pratt's during a tour of Pratt Industries.

"What I've found is when I've sat down with Pacific leaders is they've been quite surprised", he told reporters.

Bullshitting is definitely the right word to use for Scott Morrison's speech because environmental reports state that actually, we've had a rise in our emissions since 2014 - approximately 1% per year. They also state a number of inconsistencies in Australian politics in regards to coal and worldwide agreements.

Mr Morrison, who snubbed a major United Nations climate summit two days earlier, also said the Great Barrier Reef was "vibrant and resilient", weeks after his own government downgraded the world heritage site's long-term outlook to "very poor" for the first time.

Watching from the floor of the assembly were Foreign Minister, Marise Payne, her department chief Frances Adamson, Mr Morrison's chief of staff John Kunkel and national security adviser, Michelle Chan. Under the Paris agreement, all countries are expected to update their pledges to cut emissions at the 2020 climate conference in Glasgow.

But Mr Morrison indicated Australia is unlikely to do so at this stage.

'We have our commitments, and we're sticking to those commitments, ' he said.

He said that in a "complex and contested" world, Australia rejected a view shared by some, in which many "fatalistically see a polarised world where countries feel pushed to make binary choices".

"There's a pattern here developing, whereby Scott Morrison is loose with the truth", he told reporters in Sydney on Thursday.
