Third Connecticut Resident Dies from Eastern Equine Encephalitis”

A fourth MI resident has died from what is considered to be one of the most unsafe mosquito-borne viruses in the nation: Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus.

The person who passed on, an East Haddam occupant between 60-69 years of age, turned out to be sick in the second seven day stretch of September. This person is between 40 and 49 years of age.

The death is the third in CT this year and brings the total of EEE deaths in four states this year to 10. Public health and environmental experts have said activity levels have been more widespread than in previous years.

"The forecast is for cooler weather to arrive by the weekend, but the risk of EEE will not be gone until the first hard frost", Cartter said.

At this time there is a vaccine for horses, however there is no vaccine for people.

Here's what to know about the rare but serious illness EEE. Although EEE-infected mosquitoes continue to be detected in the southeastern corner of CT, the numbers are declining and we are not experiencing the excessively high levels of activity seen in MA.

EEE deaths have also occurred in MA and Rhode Island.

States throughout the Northeast are also experiencing an active season for EEE.

Yesterday, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station identified EEE virus in mosquitos that were trapped last week in its Bethany and Middlefield sites.

State officials urge the public to take precautions including applying insect repellent; being aware of peak mosquito hours between dusk and dawn; wearing long sleeves, pants, and socks outdoors; and mosquito-proofing homes.

Symptoms typically appear about four to 10 days after a bite, with severe cases progressing to encephalitis.

Around one-third of individuals with EEE pass on from the sickness and there is significant brain harm in many survivors.

A third CT resident has died and another is fighting for their life after being infected by the mosquito-borne virus spreading through the Northeast.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health said another person, who is in their 40s, is hospitalized with the rare virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes.

DPH officials said people should avoid overnight camping and trips to marshes and freshwater swamps.

"All four residents live in a part of eastern CT where EEE activity has been a problem before this summer", Cartter said.
