Related illnesses over 1,000 in U.S.”

The rise in cases came both as a result of new cases and local health officials identifying older cases, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention principal deputy director said in a media briefing.

In New Jersey, a task force set up by Governor Chris Murphy recommended Thursday that the state move to ban flavored e-cigarettes.

The Food and Drug Administration is analyzing products from 18 states, but neither that agency nor the CDC has pinpointed an electronic cigarette, vaping device, liquid or ingredient as the root cause.

It previously had said there were 12 confirmed deaths from 10 states, and some 805 cases reported from 46 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A report by clinicians in North Carolina last month pointed to the inhalation of fatty substances from aerosolized oils as causing acute lipoid pneumonia, but a new study by the Mayo Clinic published this week found patients' lungs had been exposed to noxious fumes.

The number of vaping-related illnesses has surpassed 1,000, and there's no sign the outbreak is fading, US health officials said Thursday.

The outbreak of cases, first reported in July, has confounded health experts.

Doctors have been unable to establish what is causing the illness, whose symptoms include chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath.

The CDC and FDA have not yet announced a link to one particular product, but said they have information on products used by 578 patients so far.

"In Wisconsin, two groups of friends. who became ill after using THC-containing cartridges specifically reported sharing Dank Vapes cartridges".

In the meantime, the CDC recommends USA consumers avoid all vaping products - especially products containing THC and bought off the street.

"No single product or substance has been linked to all lung injury cases".

The FDA has collected over 440 samples from 18 states to date, said McMeekin, and is continuing to gather and analyze more. As the investigation continues, they said those percentages might change.

"No single product or substance has been linked to all lung injury cases", according to the CDC, and the agency acknowledges that the "specific chemical exposure (s) causing lung injuries associated with e-cigarette use, or vaping, remains unknown at this time". "I can not stress enough that people should just avoid these products completely, and most especially avoid products that were purchased off the street or have been modified in any way".
