Andy Rubin shows off a phone with a 'radically different formfactor'”

Andy Rubin - the tech executive who co-created the T-Mobile Sidekick, then later co-founded Android but left Google after being accused of sexual misconduct, and ultimately went on to create Essential Phone - has teased a mystery device on Twitter.

Along with the above images, Rubin also posted a video showing the GEM devices from the rear to better demonstrate the "Colorshift" material which actually changes shade when viewed from different angles.

We don't know the official name of the phone but Essential is calling it "Project GEM".

Essential released its first phone a couple of years ago, see our full review, with a stunning ceramic and titanium design that continues to be one of the most updated phones. Dubbed as GEM, these smartphones have unique slender design. Essential's next phone can be seen in a odd and unique look with tall ratio and narrow design. Four brilliant colors are shown with a camera centered near the top of the back and what may be a center fingerprint sensor.

"We've been working on a new device that's now in early testing with our team outside the lab".

This time, however, it appears that Essential has taken inspiration from Samsung, with the GEM prototype sporting a pinhole camera cutout in the top left-hand corner of the device. Rather than the tweets of Rubin and essential official account, no further information is given about Essential's next phone. However, an XDA Developers report states that the Essential's next phone could be powered by the Snapdragon 730 processor and run Android 10 out of the box. As Rubin claims, the UI looks quite different with the apps opened up like cards on the long screen.
