Astronauts Grow ‘Space Meat’ But Admit Taste ‘Needs to Be Improved'”

To conduct the experiment, Aleph Farms teamed up with Russian company 3D Bioprinting Solutions, which develops implementations of 3D bioprinting technologies, and two American companies, Meal Source Technologies and Finless Foods, to carry out the process on September 26.

Israeli food startup Aleph Farms announced on 7 October that it had successfully grown meat in space. Spacecraft crews don't have the luxury of raising farm animals - meat-eating astronauts could enjoy steaks on long journeys instead of making do with specially prepared space food. The experiment took place inside of a 3D bioprinter developed by 3D Bioprinting Solutions.

NASA astronauts Scott Kelly (R) and Kjell Lindgren taste vegetables grown in space on the International Space Station in 2015.

LAB-GROWN meat has been created in space in an experiment that's truly out of this world. Bioprinting is a process in which biomaterials, like animal cells, are mixed with growth factors and the material "bioink", and "printed" into a layered structure. The printer uses a magnetic force to fix the cells into small, scaffold-like muscle tissue, producing meat that is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Credit: 3D Bioprinting Solutions.

However, there are other, more far-reaching goals of creating a sustainable food future for the growing world population.

On Earth, only certain Bovine cells were amassed. In zero gravity, they hang in space and interfere only with each other.

Food tech startup Aleph Farms has become the first to produce lab-grown meat - also called clean meat and cultured meat - in space.

"We are working on a fresh capacity to scheme the identical meat, but in a capacity that uses decrease than half of the greenhouse gases", stated Didier Toubia, CEO of Aleph Farms. "This joint experiment marks a significant first step toward achieving our vision to ensure food security for the generations to come, while preserving our natural resources".

The company, aiming at reshaping the trillion-dollar global animal-protein market, and the very way society eats meat, reported in May 2019 a $12M Series-A investment round led by VisVires New Protein (VVNP), Singapore; with Cargill, USA; and M-Industry - the industrial group of Migros, Switzerland, as new investors.

The company aims to build upon the success of this proof of concept experiment and, within a few years or so, make cultivated beef steaks available on Earth through "bio-farms" where they will grow this meat, Reisler added.
