County Officials: Prepare for Days Without Power

County Officials: Prepare for Days Without Power”

PG&E announced they are continuing to monitor the potential of dry, strong wind planning to sweep through in the middle of the week.

The Diablo winds, similar to the "Santa Ana winds" in southern California, develop due to higher pressure over Nevada and lower pressure over the central California coast, according to the National Weather Service.

PG&E noted that customers in the almost 34 counties - Alameda, Butte, Contra Costa, Napa, Placer, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Sonoma among them - could be affected.

"We understand the effects this event will have on our customers and appreciate the public's patience as we do what is necessary to keep our communities safe and reduce the risk of wildfire", said Michael Lewis, PG&E's senior vice president of Electric Operations.

Before the website problems began and before the shutoff event was confirmed, PG&E posted a tentative list of 30 counties, including cities and unincorporated communities within them, that may be partially impacted, noting that more updated information would be available throughout the day Tuesday.

Contra Costa County officials are disseminating recommendations for impacted residents.

The utility says power could be shut off in parts of almost 30 counties in central and Northern California starting Wednesday and through Thursday, when hot weather and strong winds are forecast. The city is planning to maintain water and sewer service with the use of backup generators, but the email added, "We do not now anticipate water or sewer service outages".

Given the prolonged period during which the wind event will unfold, and the large number of power line miles that will need to be inspected before restoration, customers are being asked to prepare for an extended outage.

In the meantime, PG&E has urged customers to enroll in PSPS alerts by zip code by calling 1-877-9000-PGE, or to sign up for text alerts by texting "ENROLL" to 97633.

Stock up on flashlights, fresh batteries, first aid supplies. This means doing regular safety checks and being sure you have enough fuel to last a few days.

Plan for medical needs like medications that require refrigeration or devices that need power.
