Kyle Larson wins playoff to race at Dover to advance”

Larson had nine runner-up finishes in the No. 42 Chevrolet since his last win September 9, 2017, in Richmond, but got the coveted playoff victory he needed at Dover to keep the Chip Ganassi Racing driver in championship contention. By the checkered flag, Kyle Larson was in Victory Lane for the first time in two years.

Denny Hamlin, who's in third in the standings, won the regular-season race at Dover and has the pole Sunday. He led once for a total of six laps, but relinquished the lead for good after Lap 327.

Larson did win the non-points All-Star race this year.

It was Larson's sixth career NASCAR triumph but more importantly, it secured a spot in the Round of 8 in the playoffs. Elliott is the defending race victor at Dover. He is making his 500th career start and Dover is celebrating its 100th race. Not only has Larson failed to win a title, long-time team owner Chip Ganassi has never won a NASCAR Cup Series championship, something that's surely chapped an organization with handfuls of IndyCar titles. Behind him were Martin Truex Jr.

Hamlin is trying to win at Dover for the first time in 28 races. Chase Elliott and reigning series champion Joey Logano both suffered serious blows to their championship runs with a rough start to the second round.

Kyle Larson snapped a 75-race winless streak as he claimed NASCAR's Drydene 400 at Dover International Speedway. Joey Logano had to pit before the green flag dropped to start the race with a mechanical issue and returned nearly two-dozen laps down - he finished 34th. Elliott, who won last week at Charlotte, also had his Chevrolet sent to the garage before 10 laps were complete with a blown engine.

The second part of the NASCAR playoffs begins in Dover, with 12 drivers remaining in the hunt for a championship. Dover was the first race of the second round.

Sporting News is tracking live updates and highlights from the Drydene 400 at Dover International Speedway.

Hamlin is for 0 for 27 in races on the concrete mile track dating to 2006. Truex ran a fast lap of 166.205. He finished 21st in the No. 11 Toyota in the May race at Dover.

Martin Truex Jr. (P), the most recent victor at Dover, will start third.
