Lakers' NBA Cares event in Shanghai canceled amid China rift”

Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni refused to answer questions on the topic after his team's game in Tokyo on Tuesday, Golden State coach Steve Kerr said he wanted to educate himself on the situation before speaking out, and Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers didn't go too deeply into specifics when asked his opinion.

Silver has attempted to dampen the firestorm in China over a tweet from Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, which read: "Fight for Freedom".

China, however, was pissed.

And I have to tell you, if you look at the market, 1.4 billion Chinese potential customers means that game six of the NBA Finals a year ago was actually better watched in China than in the United States. Chinese companies began abandoning the Rockets and TV networks said they would not show Rockets games in China. Vivo had been a sponsor for the Lakers-Nets games in China.

They even went so far as to paint over Rockets logos in a practice center in Shanghai.

Trump 2020 Campaign senior adviser Mercedes Schlapp discusses US-China trade tensions, Hong Kong protests, and the 2020 Democratic presidential field.

"Chinese observers said these extreme comments are inappropriate and disrespectful, which the majority of Chinese people don't agree with, but it should remind Western media that for Chinese people, the Hong Kong riots are just like the 9/11, which is disgusting and can't be justified", the state-run newspaper claimed.

However the NBA's initial statement in English on the furore said it was "regrettable" that Morey's views had "offended so many of our friends and fans in China". Houston owner Tilman Fertitta was at pains to emphasise that Morey had not spoken on behalf of the franchise.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo before Tuesday's preseason game between the Rockets and National Basketball Association champions the Toronto Raptors, Adam Silver went as far as to say that he and the league were "apologetic" that so many Chinese officials and fans had been upset by Morey's tweet, but he insisted that Morey has the right to freedom of expression, the report said. "It is inevitable that people around the world - including from America and China - will have different viewpoints over different issues". Silver is expected to address both teams later on Wednesday. "We simply could not operate that way".

Silver also said Morey had a right to freedom of expression.

Silver also responded to those criticizing the league's approach over the past several days, including some USA lawmakers who have called for the league to take action - some even suggesting the league should cancel its games in China. There is a reason it's the very first amendment, after all. "And we should always have freedom of speech".

Who is China to demand we give up our personal freedoms for their money?

"If Silver thinks endorsing the indiscriminate violence the radical Hong Kong protesters are resorting supporting freedom of expression, then he should think again". They don't get to tell Daryl Morey he needs to tone down his rhetoric toward a country accused of locking up over 1 million Muslims in detention camps, nor should they. Morey deleted his tweet and released a statement saying that "I was merely voicing one thought, based on one interpretation, of one complicated event", adding that "I would hope that those who are upset will know that offending or misunderstanding them was not my intention". On Twitter? Have they bothered to check our President's Twitter feed lately or at all? Not for a million or a billion or a trillion dollars.

Fine words indeed, which echo those of some business leaders who have previously found themselves temporarily detained by the state for corrective education.
