Nobel Prize in physics: 2019 winners made significant cosmological discoveries

Nobel Prize in physics: 2019 winners made significant cosmological discoveries”

Peebles was awarded half the prize while Mayor and Queloz shared the other half.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the scientists' research had "transformed our ideas about the cosmos".

Since their discovery, more than 4,000 exoplanets have been found in the Milky Way, many of them nothing like our own world. 51 Pegasi b has a four-day long orbit and is just 8 million km from its star, meaning it heats up to more than 1,000°C.

Past physics prize laureates include Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr and James Chadwick, the discoverer of the neutron. "We don't know what kind of form", Mayor said Tuesday as he arrived in Madrid for a scientific speaking engagement. The other one tries to answer these questions about: "'are we alone - is there life anywhere else in the Universe?'" And 9:37 a.m.: Adds details on Nobel Prize in medicine. In the decades since, scientists have detected thousands more of these exoplanets, and astronomers now think our universe contains more planets than stars.

The "love of science" should be the driving force for young researchers going into science, not the search for awards, said Canadian-born United States researcher Peebles of Princeton University.

His work was transformative in shifting the understanding of the hot expanding universe from qualitative to precise, in revealing the existence of dark matter, and for pointing out the puzzles that remain, said Paul Steinhardt, a professor of physics at Princeton.

"While James Peebles' theoretical discoveries contributed to our understanding of how the universe evolved after the Big Bang, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz explored our cosmic neighbourhoods on the hunt for unknown planets", the Nobel committee announced. "That's what I did", he told reporters via telephone after the award announcement.

"Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, then almost 14 billion years ago expansion started", stated academy member Ulf Danielsson, quoting the Massive Bang Principle theme on the presentation in Stockholm.

As for the award Peebles received for his work in physical cosmology, Dube said he isn't surprised.

The Nobel prizes were created in a bequest by Swedish dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel and have been awarded since 1901.

They will receive their prize - a medal, a certificate, and a cash award of about $900,000, according to Time - in December.

Yesterday the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to William Kaelin, Peter Ratcliffe and Gregg Semenza for their work in untangling how cells in the body sense and adapt to different oxygen levels.

On Friday the action moves to Norway where the Peace Prize is awarded, with bookies such as Ladbrokes backing Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The winners of this year's Chemistry Prize will be announced on Wednesday. No prize was awarded a year ago amid sexual harassment and abuse allegations against Jean-Claude Arnault, the husband of an academy member and a recipient of academy funds, according to the Washington Post.
