Climate protesters vow to ‘occupy London airport”

A London Metropolis Airport spokesman mentioned they have been working with the Met Police to arrange for the protests and all passengers could be required to indicate their boarding cross to entry the terminal.

The activists are attempting a three-day "Hong Kong-style occupation of the terminal building" to highlight what they claim is the "incompatibility" of the east London airport's planned £2 billion expansion with meeting the Government's legally binding commitment to go net carbon neutral by 2050.

London City is the fifth-biggest airport in London and is popular with business travellers, bankers and politicians on short-haul and regional flights.

The Met Police says 800 people have been arrested over four days of the group's protests around London. The group has threatened to block off the nearby Docklands Light Railway stop if they are unsuccessful in occupying London City Airport itself.

Footage and images from the airport, taken just minutes after the protest officially got under way, show police removing XR members from the airport entrance and making arrests.

"Our shared priority is the safe operation of the airport and to minimise disruption for passengers using the airport over the coming days", an airport spokesman said.

The newest protest is towards the local weather affect of flying and the Authorities's ongoing assist of airport growth.

Climate group Extinction Rebellion hit back with banners on Tuesday (October 8).

"By non-violently shutting down this airport. we are demonstrating the utter frailty of the transport systems that countries such as ours, unwisely, have come to depend upon".

Extinction Rebellion has carried out multiple rallies as part of a two-week global campaign.

Demonstrations shutting down the roads around Parliament and Whitehall to call for urgent action on the climate change and wildlife loss have continued into a third day, including mothers with babies marching on Downing Street.
