Osaka giving up United States citizenship to play for Japan in 2020 Olympics

Osaka giving up United States citizenship to play for Japan in 2020 Olympics”

Osaka grew up in the USA but told NHK that it gives her "a special feeling to try to go to the Olympics to represent Japan".

The 21-year-old, who was born in Japan to a Haitian father and Japanese mother but raised in the United States, has started the process to relinquish her USA citizenship so she can play for Japan in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japanese media reported on Thursday.

The two-time Grand Slam victor has opted to keep her Japanese nationality, as under USA and Japanese legislation, a person with more than one citizenship must choose one before they turn 22 years old.

Naomi Osaka will play tennis for Japan instead of the USA during the 2020 Olympics.

Japanese law stipulates that a Japanese with more than one nationality must choose one before turning 22 years old. "I think it will be more emotional to play for the pride of the country".

Osaka, who resides in the U.S., defeated world No.1 Ash Barty in the final of the China Open in Beijing last Sunday.

Japan's Naomi Osaka makes a forehand return during match against Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament in Osaka, western Japan, Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019.

Osaka has competed under the Japanese flag on the WTA Tour and has represented that country in the Fed Cup dating back to 2017. She started off strong winning the 2019 Australian Open but faced early exits in the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
