May unveils new Cabinet, appoints Damian Green as 'deputy'”

However, it is feared that the DUP's newfound influence on United Kingdom politics could have a negative impact on green policy, with the party having previously appointed a climate change denier as Northern Ireland Environment Minister, and a year ago becoming embroiled in controversy around a failed Renewable Heating Incentive Scheme (RHI) which cost Northern Irish taxpayers more than £400m.

Michael Gove has said he is "surprised and delighted" to land the "really important" Defra job, after he was brought back from the political wilderness by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Downing Street said he had been appointed Environment Secretary replacing Andrea Leadsom who becomes the new Leader of the Commons.

But a further point of intrigue was the near-immediate suggestion that Mr Gove was unfit to run the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs because he was a climate change denier.

Meanwhile, Liz Truss was effectively demoted to Chief Secretary to the Treasury "attending Cabinet" from her previous role as Justice Secretary. The Brexit backer was humiliated during the Conservative leadership race in 2016, when he lagged behind in the second round, defeated by Theresa May, the eventual victor.

"Specifically, it has been suggested to me that Rupert Murdoch asked you to appoint Gove to the cabinet", Watson told May in a letter published Monday.

Former Chancellor George Osborne called her a "dead woman walking" while other former minister said her position was "untenable" and she would never lead the party into another General Election.

Steve Webb, Director of Policy at Royal London and former Pensions Minister, commented: "There are few ministers who could have been appointed to this role who know as much about pensions as David Gauke".

The result means the Conservative Party will likely form an unofficial alliance with the Democratic Unionist Party to make up a majority.

In 2013, the Guardian reported that Gove, then Education Secretary, was blocked in an attempt to drop climate change from the geography national curriculum.

Replacing Green is David Gauke, who was previously chief secretary to the Treasury.

But he denied all such claims as "tripe" and urged colleagues to "calm down and get behind the Prime Minister".

There had also been speculation that Jeremy Hunt might be moved from Health Secretary after his bruising clashes with junior doctors and other NHS staff - but he stays in the same job.

Downing Street has said there will be no changes to this approach, despite the Tories looking like they will have to rely on the Democratic Unionist Party - which backs Brexit but has specific demands including close trade with the European Union - to stay in power.
