Tapwrit beats Irish War Cry to win Belmont Stakes

His trainer Chad Brown has 20-1 shot Twisted Tom, who brings a three-race winning streak into the race on his home track. The win brings the Tampa Bay Derby winner's total earnings to $1,143,902. His brother Irad captured last year's Belmont Stakes aboard Creator.

It was an up-and-down season for Tapwrit, too - well, more like a down-and-up season.

As a yearling in 2015, he walked into the Fasig-Tipton sales ring in Saratoga Springs and walked out of the ring as the property of Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Yonkers native Robert LaPenta, who shelled out $1.2 million for the then-unnamed son of Tapit. Handle on the race suffered from a lackluster field that did not include the Kentucky Derby victor, the Preakness victor, the expected favorite, or any clear standout.

It remains to be seen which 3-year-old will emerge, but it sets up the summer to be something special. Aqueduct, New York's base for winter racing, was a place to go between meets at Belmont and Saratoga.

The win became his trainer's third victor of the race after Rags To Riches (2007) and Palace Malice (2012).

Todd Pletcher's Tapwrit took the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. on Saturday.

Only 12 horses have completed the Triple Crown at Belmont - the last, and first for 37 years, was American Pharoah in 2015 while California Chrome was the last to be denied in 2014.

There was a freshness about Tapwrit as he motored to the head of the field at Belmont, steadily chopping down the gap to Irish War Cry.

"It's all good", Pletcher said. "This is where we live". So it's extra special.

"It was everything we talked about in the paddock before the race", Pletcher said. "Took a couple of tough beats, too, but it seems, for whatever reason, to suit our style well". He's the first trainer to win the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont with different horses since 1996.

Trainer Todd Pletcher kept Tapwrit out of the Preakness and immediately started training for the Belmont where a win would get him his third victory in the legendary race. Gormley finished fourth and completed the $2 superfecta of $4,486.

"It could not have unfolded any better", Pletcher said. "So at least today he showed some of his true colors, so I'm really happy about that". "I don't think it would be a surprise if either of them ran well".

"It's very vindicating-for the horse and for me, and the owners and everyone", Motion said of Irish War Cry's classic placing. By contrast, his mentor D. Wayne Lukas, 81, has 14 and Bob Baffert, 64 has 12 Triple Crown race wins.
