'Wonder Woman' keeps Tom Cruise's 'Mummy' in check at box office

'Wonder Woman' keeps Tom Cruise's 'Mummy' in check at box office”

Warner Brother's production starring Gal Gadot beat The Mummy at the weekend box office, pulling in $57.2 million in North American theaters during its first weekend, according to estimates done by the studio on Sunday.

Variety said "The Mummy" debut was on pace to make $32.2 million domestically and the studio hopes to recoup the low take in the United States in markets overseas.

Directed by talented Patty Jenkins, "Wonder Woman" has earned over $16 million from Thursday night previews from 4,165 cinemas for a $51 million weekend, a drop of around 45%.

Tom Cruise's "Mummy" reboot opened to almost $142-M internationally, "Wonder Woman" #1 in North America after falling just 45% in its 2nd frame.

"The Mummy" was announced as the kick-off to a "Dark Universe" of monster movies. That's a slow start for the film meant to launch an extended universe of monster-related titles.

As for "The Mummy", this weekend's box office runner up, it's a case of good news, bad news for Universal Pictures.

Universal could still point to strong ticket sales internationally, where The Mummy grossed USD141.8million in 63 territories, including USD52.2million in China. The top 12 films this weekend grossed $138 million, down about 5% from the same frame previous year. But should there be any doubt, it's still full-steam ahead for the Dark Universe.

"Wonder Woman" has grossed $435.2 million worldwide - already vaulting it to the eighth-highest-grossing of the year.

The Mummy sees Alex Kurtzman directing a cast that includes Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys). Fate of the Furious, the most recent installment in the Fast and Furious franchise, made nearly $225 million domestically but more than $1 billion internationally. His thriller, one of the widest openings yet for "Moonlight" distributor A24, sold a modest $6 million in tickets.

Captain Underpants, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rounded out the Top 5 at the domestic box office this past weekend. Disney and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" finished fifth with an estimated 6.2 million US dollars in its sixth weekend. "Leavey", meanwhile, is earning a mere $1.9 million from 1,956, making it a complete dud.
