Boris Johnson denies plot to topple tottering Theresa May

Although talks broke up on Tuesday night without agreement, Theresa May described the discussions as "productive".

A DUP source told the Guardian the deal was 95 percent agreed but that the Grenfell Tower fire in London would likely delay any formal announcement of the pact.

But there is only a two-year timeframe for sealing a deal, under a process unleashed by May herself on March 29 and further delayed by her own election gambit.

He joins former Tory prime minister, John Major, in calling on May to soften her approach to Brexit.

The party's opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage places it at odds with modernizing Conservatives.

Ministers have already said that the Queen's Speech may have to be set back from its scheduled date of next Monday, June 19, because of the ongoing negotiations.

But the other Stormont parties have warned that any deal between the DUP and Conservatives could make restoring power sharing more hard.

"Clearly if she's got a worse result than two years ago and is nearly unable to form a government, then she, I doubt, will survive in the long term as Conservative Party leader", former Conservative Treasury chief George Osborne said on ITV.

"Dealers are optimistic that the Conservatives will do a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP)".

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland James Brokenshire has warned there was "very little time left" to restore a power-sharing executive at Stormont before a 29 June deadline.

Sinn Fein's Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill has said she will raise the issue with Mrs May in face-to-face talks in London on Thursday.

O'Neill said she will also travel to Dublin in the coming days to meet with new Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.

"I will be making it very clear that any deal between the Tories and the DUP can not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday and subsequent agreements".

May has given no indication she will change course on the key elements of Brexit; but whatever her plan she will be heavily reliant upon the 10 lawmakers from the eurosceptic DUP, who would help her edge past the 326 votes needed in parliament to avoid the government collapsing.

Standing outside 10 Downing St. today, Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May tried to put a courageous face on the disastrous results of Thursday's vote.

Major pleads with May to reject a deal and form a minority government instead.

The DUP campaigned for Brexit but argues in its manifesto for the maintaining of a "seamless and frictionless" border with Ireland. "I think most of the Scottish Conservatives will want to see perhaps some changes with the policy going forward".

"It's going to be hard".

"I don't think Theresa May and this government have any credibility", Corbyn told the Sunday Mirror, predicting that there could be another election within months.

Guy Verhofstadt, the European parliament's chief Brexit negotiator, warned on Tuesday that "the current uncertainty can not continue" and on Wednesday issued five "pressing questions" on Twitter.

The situation in Northern Ireland was first thrown into disarray with the Brexit vote.

"There is a unity of goal among people in the United Kingdom", May said following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

Mr Verhofstadt urged the European Union to bring forward legislative proposals for closer integration of the remaining 27 member states, to take advantage of the opportunity provided by Brexit and the election of the pro-European Mr Macron.

The Times newspaper said finance minister Philip Hammond would push May not to leave the customs union - an arrangement which guarantees tariff-free trade within the bloc but prohibits members from striking third-party trade deals.

"Yesterday Emmanuel Macron, the new French president, spoke about an open door, he said if Britain is changing its mind it will find an open door", Verhofstadt told the European Parliament. "It's a unity of goal, having voted to leave the European Union, that their government gets on with that and makes a success of it".

But any deal between the two parties has yet to be announced, and details of how they may cooperate remain sketchy.
