CAUGHT ON CAMERA: 5 minutes of terror at baseball field in Alexandria

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: 5 minutes of terror at baseball field in Alexandria”

"Just left hospital. Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter", he wrote.

Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., responded on Twitter: "Horrified by shooting in Alexandria", he wrote.

Four other people were taken to hospital following the shooting, which was described in a dramatic blow-by-blow account on CNN by Representative Mo Brooks of Alabama.

Several Republican lawmakers were practicing early Wednesday morning for the annual charity baseball game between them and House Democrats when the shooting occurred. "And Steve Scalise was one of the first to reach to me and say 'Peter, whatever I can do to help I will'".

President Donald Trump, accompanied by first lady Melania Trump, made a hospital visit on Wednesday evening.

Also shot were a congressional staffer and members of the Capitol police force.

Although authorities at the press conference declined to identify the shooter, the Washington Post identified him as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, citing law enforcement sources.

"Steve Scalise, my colleague from Louisiana, who is the No. 3 Republican in the house was shot and is in critical condition".

Asked about the Federal Bureau of Investigation statement at a press conference Wednesday, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), who was present at the shooting, appeared to identify the second congressman as Roger Williams (R-TX), whose staffer was among those shot. "We come out and make the nation better for it", he said.

Hodgkinson was vociferously anti-Trump on social media.

Katko, R-Camillus, said he was in the House gym when Capitol Police showed up after 7 a.m. with an emergency escort for House Speaker Paul Ryan, who was also in the gym.

"Quite frankly, it was not only chaotic", Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown said. "And, I think this is sort of a wake up call as to how you can take that angst and that anger and go too far".

In a message directed to Rep. Steve Scalise, the Louisiana Republican wounded in the attack, Trump said: "America is praying for you, and America is praying for all of the victims of this bad shooting".
