Dufner has another 65 and opens big lead at Memorial

Dufner has another 65 and opens big lead at Memorial”

Not since Nick Faldo in the 1989 Masters had anyone shot a 77 in the third round and come back to win. His pulse back to normal, which for Dufner means barely beating, he bounced back in a big way Sunday.

Bubba Watson watches his shot on the second hole during the third round of the Memorial golf tournament, Saturday, June 3, 2017, in Dublin, Ohio.

Jason Dufner secured his fifth PGA Tour title with an impressive three-shot victory at the Memorial Tournament on Sunday.

"[Saturday] wasn't my best day", Dufner told CBS Sports' Dottie Pepper after his win.

"I thought I was in control (after 36 holes and) I had to get over it quick".

"I know I can play well here", he said. Muirfield Village has shown an entertaining side, where players like Dufner have carded some low scores over the week, but over the weekend it showed some teeth.

The 33-year-old from Utah, who finished third in last year's PGA Championship, trailed midway leader Jason Dufner by five shots overnight but five birdies - and a bogey on the 13th - saw him move into the outright lead on 13 under par ahead of 2013 victor Matt Kuchar.

Ariya Jutanugarn took the No. 1 spot in the world ranking without hitting a shot, and Paula Creamer and In-Kyung Kim lead the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway Township, New Jersey. And he wound up winning by three shots over Rickie Fowler and Anirban Lahiri.

While Dufner has won a major before, having lifted the PGA Championship's Wannamaker Trophy, he has not been a regular in contention in recent years.

He was happier about the first reference. He's a major champion and a multiple PGA Tour victor, he's going to be a tough guy to chase down.

"I would have liked to have played better today, but it's nice to make the birdie at the last".

Bal a Bali earned his second Grade 1 win of the year to go with his victory in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile over the same turf in March.

Dufner played the front nine in level par and then made his move at the start of the back nine.

Summerhays will resume his round on nine-under par, just one shot ahead of Rickie Fowler who sits alone in third. Fowler was runner-up in 2010, shot 84 from the final group playing with Tiger Woods in 2012 and was among the leaders on the back nine Sunday. They finished another shot behind.

DUBLIN, Ohio Jason Dufner never lost sight of the big picture even after losing a big lead.

Daniel Summerhays made bogey on his last hole and shot 69 to finish five shots behind Dufner. Over the next five hours because of the rain delays, four players had at least a share of the lead and seven players were in the hunt. "Subconsciously I'm just putting, but I'm more focused on my breathing and where I'm at with that". No putt looked like a sure thing, not even his 2 foot, 9 inch birdie putt on 17 Sunday.

The putt, the longest he holed all week, elicited an emphatic fist pump from the typically flat-lining, emotionless Dufner. He put his third shot to just over 30 feet on the 18th.

It was Fowler who "opened the doors" to Dufner and adopted him as a pseudo-roommate at his house in Florida this past winter.

Anecdotally, there were numerous occasions when he could be seen flailing over a putt.

While some golfers were affected by rain that led to two separate delays, the 40-year-old was at his best down the stretch to finish on top. "They're hungry. They want to win tournaments".

Fowler started the tournament with a triple bogey on his second hole and he was 3 over through four holes when he turned it around Thursday for a 70.
