Lewis Hamilton scores sixth F1 Canadian Grand Prix win”

The new twist: Valtteri Bottas was second, the first 1-2 finish for the Mercedes teammates since they joined forces this season.

Vettel's front wing was damaged when he was passed by Max Verstappen of Red Bull at the start, the Dutchman running in a strong second place until he retired with electrical problems after 11 laps.

Max Verstappen surged from fifth to second, clipping Vettel's front wing on his way past before Felipe Massa was taken out by a spinning Carlos Sainz after the Toro Rosso driver had lost control following contact with Romain Grosjean's Haas auto in the approach to Turn 3.

Red Bull driver Ricciardo, who qualified sixth fastest, had a tough race as he was forced to fend off the challenge of Force India drivers Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon over the last 15 laps.

Vettel quickly set about chasing down the pink duo ahead and he got the better of Ocon at turn one, coming down the inside and forcing him wide.

"I had my first pole here, I had my first win here 10 years ago and to repeat it this weekend is incredibly special", said Hamilton, who also started from pole for the sixth time in Canada.

"It's insane to think after 10 years that I enjoy racing every lap just as I did 10 years ago".

"It was our first one-two of the year so in terms of optimal points it was the most powerful weekend we've had, and we maximised it". I think a podium was possible but once again we come away with nothing.

Sebastian Vettel now leads the standings Where is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix held and how many laps is it?

On the 10th anniversary of his very first victory in the sport here, Hamilton romped to his sixth win at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to move to within 12 points of Vettel in the title race.

"Over the moon", he said, during a weird post-race prize-giving ceremony in which Australia's Daniel Ricciardo, who took third, dared master of ceremonies Patrick Stewart to drink champagne from his shoe.

The situation was reversed on Sunday, with Vettel dropping well down the field after having to stop and replace a damaged front wing before charging back to fourth.

"We had a discussion [about going onto the super-softs] before the race started", Hamilton added. "I think you always need weekends like this", he said to Sky Sports.

But the 18-year-old showed his skill to become the first Canadian not named Villeneuve to score points in a Formula One race. Kimi Raikkonen overcame a late brake issue on his Ferrari to hold on to seventh ahead of Renault's Nico Hulkenberg. There was an early Safety Car when contact between Haas' Romain Grosjean and Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz ended up with Sainz and Massa in the barriers.

While Mercedes celebrated a return to form, the struggles continued down the paddock at McLaren as double world champion Fernando Alonso, back from his Indianapolis 500 adventure, failed to get out of the second qualifying and will start 12th. There was some discussion between Perez and Force India, telling him to let Ocon past - Perez didn't want to and Force India agreed to give him three laps to overtake Ricciardo before Ocon would try to overtake.

And seeing the yellow helmet brought back memories of his childhood in Britain, where he would pop in videotapes of Senna's races and say, "That's my driver".
