London residents demand answers in deadly high-rise blaze

London residents demand answers in deadly high-rise blaze”

Prime Minister Theresa May said there will be a "proper investigation" following the Grenfell Tower fire, adding: "If there are any lessons to be learned they will be, and action will be taken".

According to an eyewitness' account to the Telegraph, the baby was caught by a man on the street below. Many people are still missing.

"Since the refurbishment they've had problems with the electricity, problems with the gas", said local resident Virginia Sang, 62.

The scenes of a skyscraper engulfed in flames on a picture-perfect blue-sky day evoked memories of NY in September 2001. Edward Daffarn, one of the survivors of the London fire, said he and other tenants had been complaining for years about issues at the building.

"In my 29 years of being a firefighter", she said, as the building continued to belch smoke that could be seen for miles around, "I have never ever seen anything of this scale".

"There is potential for the fire to propagate throughout the system if adequate fire barriers are not installed. the installation of fire barriers at each floor level above the first floor level (i.e. starting with the second storey) should be considered", the BRE said in a publication entitled "Fire performance of external thermal insulation for walls of multi-storey buildings".

Residents were told to stay in their homes after the fire broke out, following the official regulations.

Planning documents detailing the refurbishment did not refer to a type of fire barrier that building safety experts said should be used when high-rise blocks are being re-clad, according to Reuters research.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea said its "immediate priority" is to accommodate the residents of Grenfell Tower, families with young children, the elderly and the vulnerable. We have robust fire safety regimes and carry out regular inspections in all of our 32 tower blocks.

However, no action, say residents, was initiated in this regard.

If it wasn't for Grenfell's Muslim residents who were awake in the early hours of Wednesday (June 14) observing Ramadan, the deadly fire may have unfurled to more of the 24-storey tower injuring a larger number of residents.

Dany Cotton told Sky News that authorities don't expect to find anyone else alive after the blaze and that it's too early to speculate on how it started.

"We always take all concerns seriously and these will form part of our forthcoming investigations", it said in a statement. "It's almost 11 years since it has been reviewed", he said, adding that over 4,000 building had no fire sprinklers fitted.

The cause of the fire has not yet been reported.

Another fire safety expert, Angus Law from the University of Edinburgh, told the press that reports of the Grenfell Tower bore "similarities with other fires that have occurred recently around the world". Up to 600 people lived in 120 apartments in the Grenfell Tower. It is one among a cluster of high-rises that stick out from the northern tip of leafy and stately Kensington, marking an unofficial western entry point to central London.

"We really need people to change their behaviour", Pegg said.

Several firefighters also suffered minor injuries in the blaze. Instead, it leapt within minutes to other floors - but somehow never triggered any building-wide alarms.
