Serbia draw 1-1 with Wales in World Cup qualifier”

For the fourth time in their Group D campaign, Wales failed to hold on for three points after taking the lead, with Aleksandar Mitrovic - as he was in Cardiff in November - their nemesis with an equaliser following Aaron Ramsey's penalty.

Ramsey showed unbelievable composure and audacity to chip the penalty in a passable imitation of Antonin Panenka's famous effort for Czechoslovakia at the same stadium back in 1976.

For Czechoslovakia's Antonin Panenka chipped his way into football folklore when he scored the shoot-out victor against West Germany in the 1976 European Championship final in Belgrade.

Ramsey scored a Panenka penalty in the exact same goal and stadium where the original Panenka was scored in 1976 by Antonín Panenka. Sam Vokes was a handful all game in the air and he could have doubled his team's lead on the hour mark when he got a clean header from a Ledley corner just six yards out, but he headed over.

The response from Wales, however, was full of objective, looking to take back the initiative and grab a second goal that they easily deserved. "I'm just happy it went in", Ramsey said.

Asked about the consequences of missing in that fashion, he added: "That is the risk you take".

But World Cup qualification has been far more of a struggle, with four successive draws leaving them playing catch-up.

"I suffered there, we suffered there - and it was my fault. But it is a good point in the end".

Serbia are a very good side and Wales would have taken a point before they kicked a ball in Belgrade.

"I'm pretty sure that he (Ramsey) probably hasn't even seen it", manager Coleman said of the Panenka spot-kick. It's what we thought as soon as he did it.

"But I don't think that would have been in Aaron's thinking".

Wales have drawn five global games in succession for the first time ever. "His input was enormous".

"It's a game we can't lose and we are up against the strongest team in the group". We can go there and get a result that is what can happen.

Serbia were really ramping up the pressure and Joe Allen was forced into a challenge on Filip Kostic which brought the first yellow card, ruling the Stoke midfielder out of the next game with Austria in September.

"Everybody looks at us differently and it's been tougher - we've been striving for so long to be in this position where teams take us seriously and the expectation is higher".

This has become the pivotal game in our group, as if we get the win, Georgia then play Austria and Wales in their next two games where a draw would be enough to officially kill either side's chances.

However, ultimately the result is the all-important thing and this draw, while not putting Wales out of contention, does make all of these last four games win or bust.
