Uber weighs leave of absence for CEO”

The Journal reported Sunday that Michael is expected to resign Monday, while Kalanick could take a leave of absence.

Removing the executives is part of the recommendations made in a report by former attorney general Eric Holder, who was hired along with two law firms, including his own, Covington & Burlington in Los Angeles and Perkins Coie, to investigate reports of Uber's allegedly abusive work culture.

Michael disclosed this move in an email to employees today and said that David Richter, vice president of strategic initiatives, will be taking over his place. A representative for the board told the New York Times Sunday said the directors "unanimously voted" to adopt the recommendations, which will be represented to the company Tuesday.

The review came after former Uber engineer Susan Fowler made claims of sexual harassment against her manager. The company is locked in a legal battle with Waymo over self-driving vehicle tech and faces a high profile investigation into sexual harassment, along with numerous other smaller scandals and controversies.

The latest turn of events marks Uber's first concrete steps to revamps its public image and operations that have been garnering a lot of negative publicity in recent months, with the firm developing a reputation of an aggressive startup that often clashes with regulators and nurtures a toxic corporate culture.

Uber confirmed last week that a study of 215 sexual harassment complaints led to the firing of 20 people. NY general manager, Josh Mohrer, and the head of Uber's self-driving unit, have also resigned.

He lost his temper earlier this year in an argument with an Uber driver who was complaining about pay, and his comments laced with swearing were caught on video.

But Mr Kalanick, 40, said earlier this year that he needed to "fundamentally change and grow up".

Kalanick himself proposed a leave of absence last month, after the death of his mother and hospitalisation of his father following a boating accident.

Uber spokesman Matt Kallman said that he wasn't sure the company would make a statement after the meeting. The hope, according to some Uber investors, is these executives can keep Kalanick in check.

But Kalanick was fighting that recommendation on Monday - claiming his ouster, even a temporary one, would leave "gaping leadership holes" at Uber, The Information reported.

Michael, described by employees as Kalanick's closest deputy, has been a recurring flash point for controversy at the company.
