Canadian GP: Lewis Hamilton cruises to sixth win in Montreal”

The goalposts may have moved in Formula One this season but, after a dominant one-two in Canada on Sunday, three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton feels Mercedes are back on target.

Valtteri Bottas made it a Mercedes one-two as the team proved a cut above all weekend while the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo made it three podiums on-the-spin as he came home in third place.

Vettel, a four times world champion with Red Bull who leads Hamilton by 25 points after six races, qualified second for Sunday's race.

Hamilton's 56th race win in Formula One came at the scene of his first, with that breakthrough success in Montreal occurring nearly 10 years to the day earlier. "For the team to have come away from Monaco. understand the auto and then come here and deliver what we've delivered - a great blow to the Ferraris".

"I don't think in the five years I've been with the team, they have pulled together so well and really work towards the same cause. We came here with a much better understanding of the vehicle and we delivered a real blow to the Ferrari's".

Force India enjoyed a great weekend in Canada with Mexican Sergio Perez taking fifth ahead of French team mate Esteban Ocon, who was not happy at the finish.

Max Verstappen surged from fifth to second, clipping Vettel's front wing on his way past before Felipe Massa was taken out by a spinning Carlos Sainz after the Toro Rosso driver had lost control following contact with Romain Grosjean's Haas auto in the approach to Turn 3. "Got a better understanding of the vehicle, and hopefully that we can put it in the same spot in the following races".

"We had a discussion [about going onto the super-softs] before the race started", Hamilton added. There was no stone left unturned: aero, mechanical balance, set-up work, the tyres themselves, the way the drivers drove the auto. "But we gave them a lap yesterday they couldn't answer to, and then today I think they just had a bit of a messier race". It was pressure, pressure, and I couldn't afford to make a mistake.

After their Monaco nightmare, the race was going exactly the way the Briton and his Mercedes team needed it to - with him out in front, cruising unchallenged to the flag and Vettel in the minor points-paying positions. "You are hoping the vehicle held together, and it did".

Vettel finally claimed fifth when Ocon ran off at Turn One, after being blocked by Perez, and the German then ran off again himself and recovered. Thanks to the Ferrari's power advantage over the pink panthers and the battle between the two team mates, Vettel managed to get past and took the fourth spot on the finishing line.

He continued to stay in second by the fourth lap, as the safety vehicle was deployed.

Vettel's Ferrari team were also slow on the uptake after they failed to spot the German had sustained damage until the safety vehicle - deployed after Carlos Sainz and Felipe Massa crashed out on the opening lap - pitted and the race resumed.

"Wow, I am shaking.I am speechless", an emotional Hamilton said after being presented with Senna's helmet. But fourth was what he had to settle for in the end, the first time all year he has finished off the rostrum.
