Donald Trump cries 'witch hunt' over obstruction probe

Mueller has been tasked with leading the executive branch's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and any potential collusion between Russia and Trump associates.

After earlier reports had indicated that Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to close the agency's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, some lawmakers and legal experts said if the reports are true, Trump may have committed obstruction of justice, an impeachable offense.

Less than a week following his sworn testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee, voters trust former FBI Director James Comey more than President Donald Trump, according to a new poll.

He said his copies are now in the possession of the special prosecutor, Robert Mueller, and his friend said he returned his copy to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Yet, for a public that is eager to get to the bottom of the investigation into the hacking of a critical election, the pace moves too slowly, mainly due to the allegiance of public officials to President Trump instead of the welfare of our democracy.

Coats and Rogers refused to comply with the president's requests, officials said.

Comey was later sacked, with Trump acknowledging that the Russian investigation was on his mind when he chose to dismiss him.

Trump has regularly turned to Twitter to blast reports about his alleged connections to Russia or the inquiries into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives.

The White House has denied any collusion, and Mr Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win.

Sessions said on Tuesday he did not recuse himself because he felt he was a subject of the investigation himself but rather because he felt he was required to by Justice Department rules.

It emerged last week Mr Comey leaked a memo he wrote after meeting Mr Trump to a friend in the media, to combat Mr Trump's claims about the pair's conversations.

Comey revealed last week under oath before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence that he provided the contents of one of the memos detailing his February 14 meeting with the president to a friend, believed to be Columbia University professor Daniel Richman, who read parts of it to a New York Times reporter.

The President than went on to renew his attack on his presidential election opponent Hillary Clinton and her husband, former U.S. president Bill Clinton.

Questions have arisen about Sessions' own involvement in the Trump campaign and his meetings with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the US.

But Sessions on Tuesday declined to divulge much information about Comey's firing beyond what was already publicly known.

In his dramatic appearance before former colleagues, Sessions contradicted a contention made by Comey at a hearing before the same panel last week.

After Comey's firing, the administration gave differing reasons for his dismissal.

Trump continues to prove himself with his agenda on foreign policy, deregulation of former policies, promoting Christian values in America and draining the swamp of corrupt politicians among many other things. Sens. Al Franken of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont have sought an FBI investigation.
