Donald Trump visits 'critical' Steve Scalise in hospital

The gunman was shot at by the police, apprehended and taken to a hospital.

According to a statement from his office, he remained "in good spirits" prior to surgery at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. Critics say the pages offer a snapshot into the frightening hate that has pervaded politics since Trump's contentious election win last November.

Congressmen at the ballpark described hearing loud noises like the sound of firecrackers and 15 to 20 people lying on the ground and realizing they had only baseball bats to defend themselves against bullets. Members of Congress were practicing for a game when a gunman started shoot.

Multiple US media sources have identified Hodgkinson as the man police believe shot and wounded Congressman Steve Scalise and injured three others. Griner was hospitalized Wednesday after she was shot in the ankle while Bailey "was treated and released having sustained a minor injury", Capitol Police said in a statement.

"It was not only chaotic but it was a combat situation", Alexandria Police Chief Mike Brown told reporters. The House lurched back to business in a somber mood as law enforcement tracked the path the shooter traveled to his ball field carnage.

The FBI is "exploring all angles" in the case, Special Agent in Charge Tim Slater said, responding to a question about whether the attack was an act of terrorism. No one else was in custody, he said. The popular annual face-off, which raises money for charity, is scheduled for Thursday evening at Nationals Park across the Potomac River in Washington, and will go forward as planned.

When the shooting stopped, the Republican from Arizona, who spent two years preparing to spend a week alone on a deserted island to put his survivalist skills to the test, turned his belt into a makeshift tourniquet to treat an injured victim with a gunshot wound. "This has got to stop, and it's gotta stop today".

"While the president would like to attend the game and show his support for all of these fearless public servants, he has been advised that there is not enough time to follow Secret Service protocols", Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Wednesday.

Trump, who announced the gunman's death, called for unity.

"I was pinned down in right field", he said. "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us", Ryan said.

The shooter had a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62 caliber rifle, authorities said, which were purchased from "federal firearms licensees". It reportedly lasted about 10 minutes.

A Capitol Hill Police officer stands his post at the entrance to the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

Lawmaker Jeff Duncan said he was leaving the practice when he was approached by a man he later learned was the shooter, who asked if the team was Republican or Democrat before heading toward the field. DeSantis gave a similar account.

Investigators said Thursday that weapons recovered at the Alexandria scene were purchased legally and that they are examining electronics recovered from the suspect's vehicle, including his cell phone, computer and camera.

Mr Sanders said he condemned the violence "in the strongest possible terms".

In the wake of the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday, there have been increased calls for political unity in the country.

The Capitol Police officers have been hailed as heroes by the congressmen on the baseball diamond who came under fire and who credit the officers with saving their lives. But they were on scene only because Scalise is in the leadership. And we do it because we like to play baseball and try to recapture a little bit of our youth. "Those aren't good odds", Brooks said.

Mika requires assistance to breathe, but has been alert and conscious and communicating through notes, his family said in the statement. Six people were killed.
