London fire: PM May orders public inquiry

The prime minister vowed to rehouse all of the victims of Grenfell Tower, which erupted in flames early morning Wednesday in Kensington.

Pop star Lily Allen has claimed "off-the-record" figures given to police and fire crews reveal the true death toll of the Grenfell Fire to be closer to "150 people". He said he was going to come.

Parts of the building were still seen as unsafe, and Cotton said specialist dogs would be brought into the search.

The Labour leader said it is unacceptable for poor people and the homeless to be left looking for somewhere to live while land banking takes place in the area, adding properties should be "requisitioned if necessary".

May made the decision on Thursday, shortly after a private visit to the site where at least 17 were killed and more than 70 injured on Wednesday morning.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze, the worst in the British capital in a generation, was underway.

Children and a baby were seen being thrown out of the windows to be caught by emergency workers and members of the public below. "We have been working with local authorities for almost 40 years and safety and quality are integral to everything we do at Rydon.

People deserve answers. The inquiry will give them", she said. Speaking at No 10 shortly after her return from the site, she added: "We need to ensure that this awful tragedy is properly investigated. They need answers to provide them with security and peace of mind".

During planning in 2012, the building service engineering company Max Fordham advised that one option in the refurbishment was to remove "fire stopping" systems temporarily in order to install new heating pipes.

The firm behind the work said the project met all required building regulations. And at the Grenfell Tower fire, some firefighters have said cuts have taken a serious toll on operations.

"We have to get to the bottom of this".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also toured the area, meeting with volunteers and helping victims.

In parliament, the government's fire and housing ministers said other tower blocks which were also recently refurbished would be assessed.

Letters were left for those who were not at home.

Others gathered seeking news of the missing.

"I told her to leave by the stairs but she said she had been told to stay inside her flat". We have asked them whether the same material was used. We're determined to stand squarely behind the affected communities.

The Syrian Solidarity Campaign said on its Facebook webpage that Mohammed Al Haj Ali, a refugee from Syria, was one of those who had been killed.

Queen Elizabeth publicly reacted to the incident, as well, releasing a statement Thursday saying she was praying for the victims and their families.

At Latymer Community Church a few blocks away, messages of hope and condolences were written on a board in English, Arabic and Spanish.

Her grandsons, Prince William and Prince Harry, along with William's wife Kate, donated to a relief fund organised by London's local Evening Standard newspaper.

Many were moved to tears Wednesday at a moment of silent contemplation outside the Notting Hill Methodist Church in west London.

Missing people posters have been put up throughout North Kensington.

Taking to Instagram to send her love and prayers, she wrote: "This is my neighbourhood I can't believe this is happening".
