London fire: Prime minister orders full public inquiry

Sandrin described the last call as "a farewell" in which Trevisan, 27, thanked her mother for all she had done. "There are flames around us'". "I've not heard from them since", his sister Hanan Wahabi told AFP on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters rescued 65 people from the building.

The tragedy also spurred Prime Minister Theresa May to promise a full investigation.

Reports of a fire at Grenfell Tower, a public housing high-rise in West London, came in just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

"However, what we do know is that fires of this type are rare".

Jeremy Corbyn and senior Labour MPs have called for homes left vacant in Kensington and Chelsea by overseas investors to be "requisitioned" in order to rehouse those left homeless due to the Grenfell Tower fire. She returned to Downing Street without making any remarks.

Some observers asked whether hazards in the Grenfell complex, which had 120 apartments that housed as many as 600 people, were ignored because its residents are mainly poor.

LONDON, June 15 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday promised a public inquiry into a fire that gutted a 24-storey apartment block killing at least 17 people, as the government faced questions about how such a devastating blaze could have occurred.

May didn't speak with journalists during the visit.

Adele paid an emotional visit to the site of a huge fire in London on Wednesday night, hugging victims and doing her best to offer "comfort" to those affected by the tragedy.

Fire Commissioner Danny Cotton said there are still "unknown numbers" of bodies in Grenfell Tower and they are not expecting to find any more survivors.

"Our absolute priority for all of us is identifying and locating those people who are still missing", Cundy said before declining to comment on speculation about the likely final death toll: "It would be wrong for me to get into numbers that I do not believe are accurate".

Forty-four households received emergency accommodation.

Rydon has claimed the building met all necessary fire regulation and health and safety standards at the time of completion.

The PM visited the scene of the fire on Thursday morning.

His comments were echoed by Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick, a former fire minister and firefighter, who declared that "the finger is pointing at Government" over the tower blaze.

"Prince Philip and I would like to pay tribute to the bravery of firefighters and other emergency services officers who put their own lives at risk to save others", she said in a statement released by Buckingham Palace. Police said 17 people had been confirmed dead but that was expected to rise. "To see so many adults and children from all over the area come together at such short notice, and be so generous, was just mind-blowing". Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton told Sky would be a miracle if anyone were to be found alive.

Cotton says that firefighters are having trouble with the aftermath.

"Right now people want answers and its absolutely right". But there was no reason to think terrorism was a factor, authorities said.

"We saw them dying", Adi Estu, 32, who was evacuated from her home nearby, said.

Police say the rescue operations could take weeks.

Hundreds of people were in the tower block when the fire erupted.

So much food, clothing, shoes and other items have been coming in that the centers, churches and mosques have had to start turning away new donations. Dozens of others have been hospitalized.

Some residents said the official advice was that people should stay inside in the event of a fire.

Numerous tower's occupants had raised concerns about the superficial level of works.

Gilmartin said fire design has evolved over the years but it's not feasible to make all older buildings comply with the latest legislation.
