Mistaken identity: Man freed after 17 years in prison for Kan. robbery”

The proceeds of this GoFundMe will go directly to Richard Jones. The lineups were done three months after the fact, KCUR in Kansas City reported. They eventually ran out of drugs, so they drove to a neighborhood where they knew people sold crack.

They wrestled, sprawled on the sidewalk out front of a Walmart in Missouri on that hot May evening. Walmart parking lot, then stole her cell phone and drove away. She grabbed her purse back and "gave him a kick that sent him flying". There, he hopped out and attacked a woman. Neither did the store security guard. Photos of the two men show each with braided hair and a pencil-thin goatee.

Ricky Amos (left) is the doppelganger of Richard Jones (right). The statute of limitation for aggravated robbery is five years, so even if he were guilty, he could not be charged.

Jones had fought his case for years but his appeals were unsuccessful. Jones said he was at home with his family the day it occurred.

Mr Jones, who had unsuccessfully tried to appeal his case numerous times, learned of the existence of his look-alike from fellow inmates.

While in prison, Mr Jones was repeatedly told by other inmates he looked just like another inmate. 'They say you can't see the picture clearly if you [are] in it, but if I was outside this picture I would have seen the same thing'.

The resemblance was uncanny.

"We were floored by how much they looked alike", Jones' lawyer Alice Craig said.

An inmate at a United States prison has been released after 17 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit, after researchers tracked down his lookalike.

In 1999, prosecutors said that a man at a drug house in Kansas City, Kansas, was picked up in a vehicle and taken to a Wal-Mart to get money. The victim testified last week that she can no longer be certain Jones was the robber. Jones, on the other hand, had an alibi. And they both look identical.

"I remember having my doubts at trial", Miller said.

The victim agreed that she could not tell the two men apart and could now not be sure of her 17-year-old testimony.

"If I were forced to pick one, it would be the man on the left", he added, referring to Amos's photo.

Cowles signed an affidavit after he said he was presented by The Innocence Project with the new evidence of the case where it involved Amos and the misidentification of Jones. This was important because there was no physical evidence against Jones in the first place, the conviction was based on the testimony of eyewitnesses. It shows a picture of Jones, along with those of five other black men. He was African-American but light-skinned. He always maintained he didn't commit the robbery in Roeland Park and, after a hearing on Wednesday, a Johnson County judge ordered him released. Convict Richard Jones' just happened to earn him his freedom.

Jones said he doesn't believe in luck, but does believe that he has truly been "blessed". Amos has denied involvement in the robbery.

It was during his time behind bars that he heard of a prisoner who looked exactly like him.

The statute of limitations on the crime has passed, so if there was a case against Amos, he can not be prosecuted.

He was not available for comment on Howe's decision Monday. He was serving time for an armed robbery he said he didn't commit. "And he couldn't figure out why these people would pick him out of a lineup".
