The Sessions hearing shows who's really colluding with Russia”

United States president Donald Trump has said he is the victim of a "witch-hunt" following reports that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating him for possible obstruction of justice.

They say senior intelligence officials will be interviewed about whether Mr Trump tried to end an inquiry into his sacked national security adviser.

That report makes clear that three senior intelligence officers - Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers and and former NSA deputy director Richard Ledgett - are being interviewed this week by special counsel Bob Mueller as he looks into whether Trump obstructed justice in the Russian Federation case.

The New York Times reports that Mr Trump has considered firing Mr Mueller in recent days but has been talked out of it by aides.

Accusations of obstruction arose last month when the US President fired FBI Director James Comey.

At a hearing last week of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Coats and Rogers refused to say whether they were asked by Trump to help impede an FBI investigation and suggested any response in a closed hearing would require consultations with White House lawyers on whether executive privilege should be invoked.

Mueller's office declined to comment.

Mr Trump's legal team said the latest leak to the media was "outrageous".

Robert Mueller must tread carefully when investigating President Donald Trump because of his past ties to James Comey, former DOJ official John Malcolm told CNBC on Thursday.

The Post's report is based on conversations with five unnamed people who are said to have been briefed on the matter.

Comey prepared multiple contemporaneous memos documenting conversations with Trump that made him uneasy in the weeks before his May 9 firing. McCabe was referring to the agency's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

"Mueller is setting up a dragnet of obstruction, financial questions and every aspect of Trump's life and his associates lives", Gingrich wrote on Twitter, adding "very unsafe".

Obstruction of justice is defined as someone who intentionally tampers with or intervenes with an ongoing investigation.

Trump was forced to fire Flynn in February after he misled the White House about his contacts with Russian officials past year as a member of Trump's transition team.

Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller on May 17, testified on Tuesday that he would not fire the special counsel without "good cause".

The investigation began "days after Comey was sacked on May 9", according to Jeff Bezos's newspaper machine, and it also includes a search for "any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates".

Four other US Congress committees are also investigating.
