The special counsel is examining Trump's possible obstruction of justice

The Washington Post, citing unnamed officials, reported on Thursday that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the President for possible obstruction of justice.

It also quoted an intelligence official who said Mueller's office had asked the NSA for documents related to the agency's interactions with the administration as part of the investigation into Russian meddling into last year's presidential election, and whether Trump campaign officials colluded with Moscow. The quake of news would have been 5-inch headlines in papers across the country - except for the tragic shooting in Virginia.

A source familiar with the Mueller investigation, who confirmed the Washington Post report, told Reuters an examination of possible obstruction of justice charges was "unavoidable" given testimony by former FBI director James Comey.

Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, would not comment on whether Mueller was looking at possible obstruction of justice by Trump but said Congress "certainly needs to get to the bottom" of the issue.

Mueller also has the authority to investigate whether Trump tried to obstruct justice amid mounting evidence that he pressured the FBI to drop an investigation into his former national security advisor, Mike Flynn.

US President Donald Trump continued to attack Democrats and the media as he comes under investigation for possible obstruction of justice.

President Trump dismissed a potential obstruction of justice investigation into his conduct, calling allegations of collusion between him, his campaign or people associated with him and Russian Federation a "phony story".

In a second Tweet, Trump echoed previous claims that he is the victim of what he says is the "single greatest witch hunt in American political history".

Trump publicly admitted he fired Comey because of unhappiness with the Russian Federation investigation.

"The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", the statement read.

Both men refused the president's request, the Post said.

Regardless of the outcome, the specter of Mueller examining the possibility of obstruction of justice appeared to be a new blow to Trump, whose first five months in office have been clouded by federal and congressional probes into the Russian Federation issue.

Mueller's plans emerged just a week after Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Trump pressed him in February to ease up on an investigation into Flynn.

"Regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey knowing there was no good time to do it", Trump told Lester Holt of NBC News in an interview broadcast 11 May. Comey testified that Trump's demand for "loyalty" came in the context of a conversation about whether Comey would continue to serve as Federal Bureau of Investigation director at his pleasure. Trump and the White House disputed Comey's description of the events. Mueller has been building a team of investigators for a wide-ranging inquiry into Russia's meddling.
