Theresa May calls for probe of fatal high-rise blaze

On Thursday, London Police said an investigation had been launched to determine whether the blaze involved any crimes, and Prime Minister Theresa May announced a public inquiry, a type of probe that's used to investigate issues of major public concern. Many people remained unaccounted for Thursday, and officials weren't sure exactly how many were missing.

In an update on Thursday afternoon, he said he hoped the death toll would not rise to triple figures.

It is unsafe for firefighters to go into parts of the 24-story tower, so the fire department is working with structural engineers to shore up the building so they can complete a "finger-tip search" of the entire structure, Cotton said.

May calls for public inquiry.

After the visit, she said: "I know we've all heard absolutely heart-breaking, as I did this morning, heart-breaking stories of the people who were caught up in this awful, bad tragedy and I want to reassure the residents of Grenfell Tower, all of whom are in our thoughts and prayers at the moment".

An angry crowd confronted Khan as he visited the high-rise.

Fire continues to flare in the tower block that was destroyed in a fire disaster, in north Kensington, West London, Britain June 15, 2017. The local authority, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, thanked donors but said it could not take any further donations.

Barwell had told lawmakers that the government meant to review fire safety standards following a deadly blaze at the Lakanal House high-rise building in south London in 2009, in which three women and three children died.

Entire families are missing, and the death toll is certain to rise.

Firefighters trying to race into the building were protected from falling debris by police officers, who placed riot shields over their heads.

British Prime Minister Theresa May speaks to Dany Cotton (left), Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, with members of the fire service as she visits Grenfell Tower. "We like to think of ourselves as "roughty, toughty" and heroes - they are heroes - but they have feelings".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has toured the area near the west London tower block devastated by a fire, meeting with volunteers helping victims and promising to get to the bottom of what happened. Specially trained dogs were being brought in to aid the search.

London Police are expressing concern that they may not be able to identify all of the people who died in the tragic west London apartment tower fire.

In addition to those killed, ambulance crews took 74 people to local hospitals after the fire.

One of the first victims has been named as 23-year-old Syrian refugee Mohammed Alhajali.

Fears grew for others, such Bassem Choukeir, his wife Nadia, her mother Sariyya and his three daughters Mirna, Fatmeh and Zaynab. They lived on the 22nd floor, and the Lebanese Embassy has listed them as missing.

Families are also concerned about two young Italian architects who are missing. In the final conversation, Trevisan said: "The flames are in the living room".

She said "a good half" of the building had yet to be searched in detail, adding: "It is the upper floors which will be more challenging and will need some additional shoring up for us to be able to get in there".

Taking to Instagram to send her love and prayers, she wrote: "This is my neighbourhood I can't believe this is happening". But the focus has turned to renovations completed past year that added decorative touches to the building. Those upgrades apparently included installing insulated exterior cladding, new windows and a new heating system. In contrast, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was pictured with those who have lost their homes and neighbours in Tuesday night's fire. "Every person in a position of power has to answer questions about this".

Smoke was still wafting out of the shell of the Grenfell Tower on Thursday, and a Reuters cameraman saw a big piece of building cladding fall from the building.

Volunteers and charities worked through the night to find shelter, food and clothes for people who had lost everything. So much food, clothing, shoes and other items have been coming in that the centers, churches and mosques have had to start turning away new donations.

By the church's front door, residents have taped signs looking for information about Khadija Saye, last seen on the 20th floor, and Mariem Elggwahry, last seen on the 19th floor at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Outside the cordons, impromptu tributes appeared with photos of missing people, messages of condolences, flowers and candles.
