Trump expresses more frustration over Russian Federation investigation

President Donald Trump, on social media Thursday, criticized the wide-ranging investigation of Russian interference in the US election as Robert Mueller appeared to widen his probe to include whether Trump tried to obstruct justice.

SHAPIRO: And so the question would be, was the dismissal of Comey meant to obstruct the investigation into possible collusion or Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign?

The investigation began soon after the dismissal in May of the director of the FBI, James Comey, who was conducting an investigation into alleged links between the members of Trump's election headquarters and Russian Federation.

After Mr Comey's testimony, Mr Trump said he had been vindicated because his former FBI director confirmed telling Mr Trump on three occasions that he was not under investigation.

The newspaper noted Mueller had requested interviews with CIA Director Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director.

Trump is now having his personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, handle all matters relating to Russian Federation, in lieu of the White House counsel.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Mueller is now investigating President Trump for obstruction of justice. It is doubtful the White House could ultimately use executive privilege to try to block them from speaking to Mueller's investigators.

"I think people should not overstate the significance of a special counsel's investigation".

SHAPIRO: You also report that investigators are looking into whether financial crimes might have been committed by Trump associates.

"A lot of people have tried to make the case - including the president - that this means that the collusion investigation is being abandoned", Entous said.

When Mueller, a former FBI director, was first appointed to the role by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, conservatives cheered the decision, saying he would conduct a fair investigation into alleged Russian election interference or go after Trump's enemies.

Now, the facts facing Mr. Mueller and Mr. Rosenstein are as follows.

The White House has said the subsequent meeting with the banker was a pre-inauguration diplomatic encounter, unrelated to business matters.

Sari Horwitz covers the Justice Department and criminal justice issues nationwide for The Washington Post, where she has been a reporter for 30 years.

Following Comey's testimony, Trump tweeted his thoughts on Comey.

Quoting officials, the newspaper said one event of interest to Mr Mueller is an exchange on March 22, when Mr Coats told associates that Mr Trump had asked him to intervene with Mr Comey to get him to back off the focus on Mr Trump's former national security advisor Mike Flynn as part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of the Russian Federation affair. One - can a president be indicted while sitting?

Vice President Mike Pence has reportedly hired his own personal lawyer to deal with matters relating to the Russian Federation investigation.

The former speaker said Trump called him Monday night and that the two discussed Gingrich's concerns.

Exit question: The New York Times couldn't possibly bungle a highly sensitive story about Russiagate, could it?
