Many Cuban exiles embrace Trump policy but want more

Now there are six airlines - American, United, Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, and Alaska - that fly to Cuba.

The Treasury Department said individuals who bought an airline ticket or rented a room or vehicle before Trump's announcement could make additional travel-related purchases for that travel under the Obama policy, even if their trip to Cuba takes place after the new, stricter Trump regulations go into effect.

Boozman said he agreed with Trump pushing for democratic reforms in Cuba, but called restoring the restrictions the "wrong approach". Trump isn't overturning Obama's decision to end the "wet foot, dry foot" policy that allowed most Cuban migrants who made it onto US soil to stay and eventually become legal permanent residents. "We now hold the cards". And they will saddle the US government with the complicated task of policing U.S.travel to Cuba to make sure there are no transactions with the military-linked conglomerate that runs much of the Cuban economy.

Trump listed some of the Castro regime's anti-United States actions, ranging back to the Cuban Missile Crisis, and added, "We will never, ever be blind to it. We know what is going on and we remember what happened".

"President Trump promised that he would repeal everything Obama had done with Cuba", said Valladares, who was appointed ambassador to the U.N. Commission on Human Rights by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

Embassies in Havana and Washington will remain open. And there will be no further restrictions on the types of goods that Americans can take out of Cuba, including the country's popular rum and cigars.

At the venue where Trump announced his policy changes, the president received a warm welcome from audience members. Many presidents, though, have predicted the end of the Castros and, to date, none have been correct.

Trump's revised approach calls for stricter enforcement of a long-time ban on Americans going to Cuba as tourists, and seeks to prevent USA dollars from being used to fund what the Trump administration sees as a repressive military-dominated government. "We will enforce the embargo", he said.

"With God's help a free Cuba is what we will soon achieve", Trump, accompanied by Vice President Mike Pence, said at the Manuel Artime Theater, a highly symbolic venue named after a leader of the Bay of Pigs exile invasion of Cuba in 1961, a failed USA -backed attempt to overthrow the revolutionary government of Fidel Castro. And Americans will no longer be allowed to travel to the island on their own for "people-to-people" purposes, once the new rules are in place.

"I want to express our deep gratitude to a man that's really become a friend of mine", Trump said of Rubio. You have no choice.

Cuban-born poet Armando Valladares, who was imprisoned for 22 years by the government of then-Cuban leader Fidel Castro, said at a weekly luncheon of Cuban exiles that he is vexed that not all of Obama's changes were rolled back. "They are rejected officially today - rejected".

The policy changes will not take effect until those Departments have finalized their new regulations, a process that may take several months.

Trump was knocked Friday, though, from both sides.

"You went out and you voted, and here I am", Trump said Friday.

Obama's Cuba policy strategy - favoring dialogue and betting on changes promoted by the private sector and not necessarily by dissidents - clearly divided the Cuban opposition.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says it will be business as usual for Canada and Cuba despite a renewed hardening of relations between the Communist island nation and the United States.

Obama announced in December 2014 that he and Cuban leader Raul Castro were restoring diplomatic ties between their countries, arguing that a new approach was needed because the policy the USA had pursued for decades had failed to democratize the island. An AP Fact Check finds Trump actually is preserving most of the important elements of Barack Obama's opening with the island.

Travel to Cuba has steadily increased since 2015.

The restrictions on dealing with the military could significantly affect American travel, although the military has already begun to reorganize its ownership of some businesses and entities in anticipation of such changes.

"It has not led to greater freedom in Cuba", the official said. "And you can tell where they are because there are dozens of people crowded around there", said Carlos Gutierrez, a Cuban-American who served as commerce secretary in the George W. Bush administration.

"The investments in Cuba by Canadian companies and business people, the opportunities for tourism, for trade and for mutual benefit in this relationship will certainly continue".

The Trump-Cuba policy redo goes down well with former Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

The decision to prohibit business with GAESA to direct tourists to private companies and AirBnB is an example of Trump's ability to impact his business' competitors while in the White House.

CBS 2's Mai Martinez watched the president's speech with some Cuban-Americans who are applauding the change.

"We had dinner with Sen".

Trump's primary goal was to halt the flow of USA cash to the country's military and security services in a bid to increase pressure on Cuba's government. Rubio accompanied the president on Air Force One.

"America is prepared to outstretch its hand and work with the people of Cuba".

Trump pointed to a few of the oppressive acts committed over the years under the Castro-regime, including the suppression of free speech, imprisonment of dissenters, and the trading of nuclear arms to the communist regime of North Korea.

Trump's revised Cuba rules aren't all that drastic.
