Castile protesters target city where officer worked

Castile protesters target city where officer worked”

After peaceful protests erupted in St. Paul in response to officer Jeronimo Yanez' acquittal for shooting and killing Philando Castile, 18 people were arrested.

As crowds swelled into the thousands, protesters began marching through the streets, toward St. Paul Cathedral.

This is now the third straight day people have taken to the streets over this verdict.

The video of Castile's death went viral after his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, live streamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook, seconds after Castile was shot by the officer. Shortly after the verdict, the city announced Yanez would not be returning to its force.

Earl Gray, an attorney for Yanez, told Reuters after the verdict that "justice was done" and that Yanez was just "doing his job".

"People have died for us to have these rights and now we're devolving", she said.

A Minnesota police officer was acquitted Friday in the shooting of a black motorist whose dying moments were captured on Facebook video in a case that shocked the nation.

"Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me", Castile told Yanez.

Head of the National African American Gun Association Philip Smith suggested police officers receive more training to learn that black people also have Second Amendment rights. While we cannot know the jury's thinking in Mr. Yanez's trial, we can know the context in which his trial took place, and should not be surprised by its outcome.

Outside the courthouse, Castile's mother said Yanez got away with murder.

In the incident last July, Yanez, 29, stopped Castile, 32, and asked him to produce his licence. Castile's family claimed he was profiled because of his race, and the shooting renewed concerns about how police officers interact with minorities. They raised questions about discrepancies in Reynolds' statements to investigators, including where Castile carried his wallet and who purchased the marijuana that was in the auto.

John Choi, the Ramsey County prosecutor assigned to the case, told reporters following the verdict that Castile "did nothing that justified the taking of his life".

On July 6, 2016, Castile was driving with his girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter when they were pulled over by Yanez for a broken tail light in the suburban neighborhood of Falcon Heights in St. Paul, Minnesota. That said, by arresting 18 protesters, Minnesota authorities have stressed that misconduct during the protest for Castile will not be tolerated. Castile told the officer that he was licensed to carry a firearm and that he had a weapon in his possession. Castile responded, "I'm not pulling it out", and Reynolds said, "He's not pulling it out". Like many who expressed alarm at the verdict, they were critical of the makeup of the jury: eight men (one black) and four women (also one black).
