It's not about the slam numbers - Murray on his tussle with Wawrinka

It's not about the slam numbers - Murray on his tussle with Wawrinka”

World number one Andy Murray shrugged off a sluggish start to reach his fifth French Open semi-final with a 2-6 6-1 7-6 (0) 6-1 defeat of Japan's Kei Nishikori on Wednesday.

He won the first set against Nishikori 6-1, led by two sets to one and looked poised to go a break up in the fourth when play was interrupted by a loud noise from the PA system.

World No1 Sir Andy Murray has promised to come out all guns blazing in his semi-final clash with Stan Wawrinka after booking his place in the French Open last four with victory over Kei Nishikori yesterday.

Third seed Stan Wawrinka is yet to drop a set and ended France's hopes for another year with a 7-5 7-6 (9/7) 6-2 victory over Gael Monfils.

"In the US Open final previous year he definitely deserved to win [against Novak Djokovic]". "I'm sure he's going to be as motivated as ever, so I expect him to come out and really play his best", said Djokovic, who has won all five matches, and 11 of 12 sets, he's played against Thiem.

"He's playing well, I'll need to take it to him and play some good tennis if I'm to win".

Nishikori surpassed Jiro Satoh for the most quarter-final appearances by a Japanese man, as he made the last eight for the second time in three years in Paris.

At the bottom of the draw, Dominic Thiem dismissed defending Open champion Novak Djokovic, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 6-0, to set up a semi with heavy title tip Rafael Nadal. "It was windy, so the timing was hard, but once I was able to get into a rhythm and keep him away from the baseline, that made the difference".

The fourth-seeded Nadal, a nine-time champion at Roland Garros, was leading 6-2, 2-0 when Carreno Busta stopped.

Svitolina, who leads the tour this year with 31 wins and four titles, is bidding to become the first Ukrainian woman to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. "So it was important to stay strong with myself, and I'm happy to get through this match", he said.

The 30-year-old Murray arrived at Roland Garros with genuine concerns over his form after a mediocre claycourt swing, but with coach Ivan Lendl watching over his shoulder he has rediscovered the winning mentality just in time. I don't even know if I won or lost.

That match lasted almost four hours and also saw Nishikori drop a set to love.

Pliskova was the runner-up at last year's U.S. Open. Anyone can win matches when they are playing well. "It's not always about how well that you play or the level that you play at. but with the right attitude, right game plan, right tactics, you can still win matches".

"Well, obviously the way I turned the match around, it was not a good first set", Murray said.
