John Oliver: Why 'Trump needs to stop lying to coal miners'”

"Trump needs to stop lying to coal miners, we all do", Oliver said.

The comedian spent a significant amount of his broadcast calling out Trump for an executive order he signed back in March lifting rules against the coal industry previously placed by the Obama administration. However Mr. Nutterbutter (for such is his name) did bring an oversized check just in case, complete with a very coal miner-like message to go along with the implied, "Just don't fuck with John Oliver". But on Sunday's Last Week Tonight, John Oliver argued that the billionaire mogul preyed on communities desperate for hope as their industry dies out. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt recently told Meet the Press that Trump had created 50,000 coal jobs since "fourth quarter of last year" - a figure Oliver described as "bullshit". The host pointed to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that showed just 1,300 coal jobs have been added since 2016 and there were just 400 new jobs in May. "The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the actual number of coal jobs created since past year is actually just 1,300". According to Oliver, that decline is correlated to the drop in natural gas prices and growth in renewable energy. Oliver did say, though, that coal mines are central to the economies of the few cities in which they are located.

"This president clearly doesn't care about [the environment]", Oliver said. "Evil", made when informed that Oliver was going to look at how Donald Trump's vote-grubbing on the issue of restoring coal jobs was as disingenuous as much of the coal industry's rhetoric to its workers. "They certainly don't have what Trump has, specifically inherited wealth and hair like the wispy pubes of an aging yeti", Oliver responded. "Stop telling them that their jobs are all coming back when they're not, stop telling them that coal is clean when it isn't, and stop pretending that this isn't an industry in the middle of a hard and painful-albeit necessary-transition. An honest conversation about coal and its miners needs to be had, and we should neither cease nor desist from having it", Oliver said. Murray's lawyers sent Oliver a cease and desist letter prior to the show airing.
