London Tower Fire: 58 Confirmed or Presumed Dead, Identification 'Will Take Weeks'”

On the figure of 58, he said: "I really hope it won't, but it may increase", while adding that "it might be that some of those are safe and well", and for some reason, had not yet made themselves known to the police.

Of the 58, he said the number of confirmed fatalities in Wednesday's inferno remains at 30.

Police have said the recovery process could take weeks, and warned some of the bodies may be too burned to be identified.

British police said that 58 people were now assumed to have died in this week's blaze at a London tower block.

"And therefore, sadly, I have to assume that they are dead", he said.

Jonathan Lum, an advertising executive who lives on the 57th floor of a glittering Manhattan tower designed by noted architect Frank Gehry, said if a fire breaks out there, he will heed the wisdom of the fire department and stay in his apartment, but partly because he lives in a building constructed in the past decade.

Police have been struggling to come up with an authoritative list of who was in the building when the fire started, making it hard to determine how many had died. Residents who survived the tower blaze lost everything and have no idea where they are going to live or how they will get back on their feet. Police have established a security cordon around the building to protect public safety and allow searchers easy access to the wrecked building.

She says she will receive daily reports from the stricken neighborhood, where hundreds of people have been displaced.

"Frankly, the support on the ground for families who needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough", she said.

British health authorities say they are still treating 19 patients, 10 of whom remain in critical condition after the London high-rise fire.

Officials are using dental records, fingerprints and DNA samples to try and positively identify victims.

The Trooping the Colour, a large parade of soldiers through central London, marks the Queen's official 91st birthday.

Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip have observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of the London high-rise fire. The queen said it was "difficult to escape a very somber mood" on what is normally a day of celebration.

Asked repeatedly whether she had misread the public mood, May did not answer directly but said the focus was on providing support to the victims.

London has a chronic housing shortage even in the best of times, and those left homeless by the fire - already angry over what they see as government inequity and incompetence - fear being forced out of the British capital.

Later, demonstrators stormed the offices of Kensington and Chelsea Council over its handling of the crisis amid concerns that earlier renovation work was linked to the dramatic spread of the blaze.

The government has promised a full public inquiry, but that has done little to ease a sense of frustration at the lack of information about how the fire moved so quickly to engulf the building.

Despite that outcome, fire experts say "stay put" is still the best advice — as long as the building has proper fire-suppression protections, such as multiple stairwells, sprinkler systems, fireproof doors and flame-resistant construction materials, some of which were lacking in the London blaze. British officials have ordered a review of other buildings that have had similar renovations.

The tragedy has provoked a enormous response from nearby communities that have donated food and shelter to the victim.

Downing Street announced a £5 million fund for emergency supplies, food and clothing for victims amid fears the death toll will rise, with more than 70 people in total still believed to be unaccounted for.
