Pakistan stun India to win Champions Trophy final”

Felicitations from all quarters started pouring in after Pakistan thrashed arch-rival India in the Champions Trophy final to clinch the title.

Opener Fakhar Zaman scored a brilliant century as Pakistan posted a monstrous 339-run target for India in the high-octane Champions Trophy final here at The Oval on super Sunday.

Amir was fearsome and two from India's top three run-getters in the tournament - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli - felt the heat, courtesy his good bowling and some poor shot making before Shikhar Dhawan got out edging one to the keeper and skipper Sarfraz Ahmed.

Next ball, Kohli hit it straight to Shadab at point and Amir, bowling at 140-plus kph, had his second wicket.

Unfortunately for team India, the move didn't pay off and they sure missed the absence of an Umesh Yadav or a Mohammad Shami.

"We tried to do out best, but even with the ball, they were aggressive, we didn't show any resistance apart from Hardik, who's knock was outstanding", he said.

"Fakhar is a great impact player, he played like a champion batsman today", Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said at the presentation ceremony.

Going into the match, India would be high on confidence having comprehensively defeated their Asian neighbour by 124 runs in the group stage.

He said: "It's been an up and down ride for us but I'm just so proud of the boys". "Now we are the champions, so hopefully this win will boost Pakistan cricket and hopefully all playing nations is coming to Pakistan".

Kohli's assessment from the first game proved right in the final as well, although India lost the summit clash.

"We have no hesitation or shame to admit we didn't play our best game". It wasn't the norm because we had prepared properly. So to dust ourselves off and come back from that has been a remarkable achievement.

Sarfraz paid tribute to the influence of a coaching staff led by Mickey Arthur, who took charge shortly before Pakistan s tour of England a year ago, where a Test series was shared but the ODI campaign lost 4-1. Many Indian fans are now tweeting congratulatory messages for the winning team but also showering the Indian team with love.

"When we arrived here (in England), we were No 8 and now we are the champions", said the 30-year-old gloveman. "We have to identify the players we want to take forward", he added.

He added: "Hopefully this win, everyone will remember, not just for today, not just for tomorrow, but for a very long, long time. Amir bowled brilliantly but all my bowlers bowled really well".

"When we arrived here, we were number eight [in the ICC one-day global rankings], and now we are the champions".

Through this victory, I would like to appeal to the other teams that please come and play in Pakistan.

The victory was achieved by one of the most de-glamorous outfits under one of the most unassuming captains in the history of Pakistan cricket -Sarfraz and he deserved it more than anyone else for showing the composure one expects from model captains.

But just like Arsenal "couldn't" beat Chelsea - See 2017 FA Cup final - like the Chicago Cubs were "cursed" to never again win another baseball title - See 2016 World Series - and like England are never to beat the Germans on penalties - sadly, some things will never change - records are there to be broken.
