Trump could force out Rosenstein, fail to stop Russian Federation probe

The Daily Beast filed a Freedom of Information Act request after it was revealed that Comey had drafted memos detailing each of his nine conversations with President Trump.

Democrats challenged Rosenstein on whether he would appoint a special prosecutor to look into Russia's election meddling.

The focus on Rosenstein sharpened Friday because the President attacked the deputy attorney general in a tweet, blaming him for what he terms a "witch hunt". There is no reason why President Trump should be speaking to the investigators, let alone considering firing them for investigating him or the people around him. Trump, who isn't typically shy about leveling criticism, especially on Twitter, hasn't commented on the longtime former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment for this story, but said "that the special counsel's office has undertaken stringent controls to prohibit unauthorized disclosures and will deal severely with any member who engages in this conduct".

U.S. President Donald Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The Justice Department's investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election is looking at Kushner's multiple roles in the Trump administration, including the Trump campaign's 2016 data analytics operation; his relationship with former national security adviser Michael Flynn; and Kushner's own contacts with Russians, according to U.S. officials briefed on the probe. Comey testified that Trump directed him in February to drop an FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn relating to the Russian Federation matter.

For his part, the Deputy Attorney General who made the call on appointing a special counsel (after Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation matter) told Senators today that he saw absolutely no reason to terminate Mueller.

Trump also compared his position to the investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server in another tweet. He has already been subpoenaed by the House intelligence committee.

"His concern was, because we're looking at the potential - again, that's the subject of the investigation - coordination between the campaign and Russian Federation, because it was President Trump - President-elect Trump's campaign, this person's view was, inevitably, his behavior, his conduct will fall within the scope of that work", Comey said. Rosenstein, who would be responsible for actually dismissing Mueller, told USA lawmakers he would fire him only with good cause. Still, the snowballing investigation has deeply angered Trump, who denies he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation.

"This is not a hypothetical exercise", said Cramer, who's managing director of consulting firm Berkeley Research Group LLC. Ryan said during an interview on the Hugh Hewitt radio show. The president has denied that he told Comey to drop the Flynn investigation.

His time under Bush, Obama and then Trump made him the longest-serving us attorney in the nation's history when he was confirmed to his current role under Sessions.

Other Trump supporters homed in on the sequence of Mueller's job interviews. Coats later told lawmakers he never felt pressured to intervene. Thursday night, Rosenstein issued an unusual statement complaining about leaks in the case.
