U.S. shoots down Syrian aircraft for first time”

On June 8, USA officials reported that a drone likely connected to Iranian-supported Hezbollah forces fired on US -backed troops and was shot down by an American fighter jet.

Just hours earlier, the USA bombed Syrian government and allied troops inside a protected zone in that area, and marked a sharp escalation in the skirmishes between the coalition and those pro-Syrian government forces there.

Russia's defense ministry says it is suspending coordination with the United States in Syria over so-called "de-confliction zones" after the Americans downed a Syrian government fighter jet.

A number of SDF forces were wounded in the attack, the statement from the Combined Joint Task Force said.

The ministry accused the USA of failing to use a pre-established communication channel to warn Moscow of a strike downing the warplane, announcing it would drop the use of this channel.

The launch of surface-to-surface medium range missiles into Syria's Deir el-Zour province comes as Islamic State militants fleeing a USA -led coalition onslaught increasingly try to fortify their positions there.

"The command of the coalition forces did not use the established communication channel for preventing incidents in Syrian airspace", it said, adding Moscow "ends cooperation (regarding the channel) with the American side from June 19".

A top Russian diplomat has condemned the United States for shooting down a Syrian Air Force fighter jet the previous day as an act of "aggression".

"This strike can be regarded as another act of defiance of global law by the United States", Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Monday, according to Russia's state-run news agency Tass.

"What was it if not an act of aggression?"

A Syrian warplane was shot down over Raqqa by the United States-led coalition after a Syrian regime SU-22 dropped bombs near Syrian Democratic Force, or SDF, fighters. The action appears to mark a new escalation of the conflict.

An Army spokesman at the Pentagon said at the time that the drone carried more weapons and was considered a direct threat, prompting the shootdown.
