Vehicle struck pedestrians in north London, several injuries reported

"At that moment in time, basically a van swerved into them deliberately", he said, citing a witness at the scene.

Another person who lives nearby, Ishmael, told the station: 'I pray there regularly. "I want to kill all Muslims'".

"Tomorrow, we're going to be here praying", Mohamad said.

People could be heard shouting and screaming amid the chaos and bloodstains were visible on the pavement.

"He has been taken to hospital as a precaution, and will be taken into custody once discharged. A post mortem examination will be scheduled due course", Metropolitan Police said.

Witnesses at the scene of a suspected deadly terrorist attack outside a London mosque described the horror they experienced as a van plowed into a group gathered outside after evening prayers, killing at least one and injuring 10.

Counter-terrorism police have joined regular police officers looking into the incident, the Guardian newspaper reported.

Police also stated that no "knife injuries" have been reported at this point.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim to serve in that position, said extra police would be deployed.

MCB deputy head Miqdaad Versi said the incident happened "outside the Muslim Welfare House", which is on Seven Sisters Road near the mosque.

They said "a number of casualties" were being treated after the incident.

CNN talked with an eyewitness who said it did not appear to be an accident because the van apparently accelerated.

"I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight. There were bodies around me". "I didn't see the attacker himself, although he seems to have been arrested, I did see the van". "But he was like bleeding from his ears and stuff as well, so he was really messed up", he said. The van drove over people who were leaving late prayers. There were 15 to 20 people hitting somebody - she didn't realise it was the man who ran over the people.

She added: "I saw a lot of people injured". One is tall and the other two people ran away. "They ran away somewhere".

Images of the van showed it was rented from Pontyclun Van Hire in Pontyclun, near Cardiff.

Opened in 1994, Finsbury Park Mosque is an unassuming five-story redbrick building in residential north London, close to Arsenal Football Club's Emirates Stadium.

"Muslim communities have been calling for increased action to tackle the growth in hate crime for many years and transformative action must now be taken to tackle not only this incident but the hugely worrying growth in Islamophobia".

"The man tried to escape".

A member of staff at Pontyclun Van Hire said the company would not be issuing a statement. "We all live perfectly fine", she said.
