Cabinet meeting in Darjeeling marred by violence by Gorkhaland protesters”

Darjeeling: GJM supremo Bimal Gurung on Saturday said that the agitation in Darjeeling hills will not stop until and unless a separate Gorkhaland is achieved and warned the TMC not to play with fire. I have also done protest and rallies for a long period of time (but not done like this).

Even as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the government would take a "tough stand" to deal with the agitators in Darjeeling, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) activists reportedly torched an under-construction ITI building at Mungpoo which is 33 km from Darjeeling. "Banks will remain open only on Monday and Thursday".

The GJM has written to the centre and has called an all-party meeting on 13 June to explain why the party is now seeking the separation of Gorkhaland from West Bengal. Stranded tourists are moving towards plains since this morning.

An Army spokesperson said, "A requisition from the state government was received".

The Army continued to patrol Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong towns, where no fresh violence was reported on Saturday. Also, revenue generating sources of state will be closed. "We are unitedly fighting for Gorkhaland".

A six-member team to conduct the special audit of the GTA was scheduled to reach Darjeeling today.

A senior official of the finance department said, "Based on the report, the state administration can lodge an FIR against persons found guilty of corruption". "We will bring complete peace and normalcy".

"What the chief minister has been doing in the hills for the last two years is nothing but a political gimmick". So, there is going to be no shutdown for tourists who suffered on Friday's bandh.

"I request Mamta Banerjee that she is a chief minister and she must not do divisive politics". However, Banerjee clarified that the state government will not budge to any strong arm tactics by GJM supporters.

As the West Bengal government pressed a fleet of buses into service to ferry the marooned tourists, a couple of local schools also offered their buses to aid them.

"We won't allow any bandh in our state". In July the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration election could take place and it is for that they are causing problems for the people here.

Yesterday, Banerjee had stated that Morcha-led GTA had "failed" to carry out any development work in the hills and when their term was scheduled to be over next month, they have started "torturing the public". I fail to understand now how the Hills are smiling. "We don't want it anymore", he added.

"There will be indefinite shutdown in GTA offices, banks and government offices from Monday".

Political analysts however are of the opinion that both AITC and GJMM are creating pressure on each other. "I love the Hills, so I will come here again and again, whatever anyone says", asserted Banerjee.
