Rep. Steve Scalise medical condition improves following shooting

Rep. Steve Scalise medical condition improves following shooting”

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was in "imminent risk of death" when he was flown to a trauma center Wednesday after being shot during an ambush of a GOP congressional baseball team practicing on a Virginia field.

"He was as critical as you can be when he came in", Dr. Jack Salva, with MedStar Hospital Washington Center, said during a news conference Friday.

President Donald Trump said Friday that wounded GOP Congressman Steve Scalise "took a bullet for all of us" when he was shot Wednesday morning at a congressional Republican baseball practice.

Later, the crowd burst into applause as Capitol Police Officer David Bailey - who was injured as he pursued the shooter - hobbled to the mound on crutches and tossed the ceremonial first pitch.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", the hospital said, adding that he had been downgraded to "serious" condition. Trump isn't overturning Obama's decision to end the "wet foot, dry foot" policy that allowed most Cuban migrants who made it onto USA soil to stay and eventually become legal permanent residents.

The annual game is a tradition that pits Democrats and Republicans against each other on the same field where the Washington Nationals play, but this year it was more about unity than division.

Scalise remains in critical condition as his teammates honor him at the game at Nationals Park. "After he leaves the hospital he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation".

Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday.

"I hope he's in good enough shape to watch, because he'll certainly feel good about what he sees", Flake said. Sava called Scalise's injury a "trans-pelvic gunshot wound", describing how a bullet entered his body near his left hip and traveled toward his right hip, causing "substantial damage to bones, organs and blood vessels".

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

"Thank you, President Trump, for keeping your commitments".

At the game Thursday night, U.S. Capitol Police checked bags with dogs in tow, in an atmosphere that attendees said seemed particularly alert. Authorities were investigating Hodgkinson's social media posts, a cellphone, computer and camera.

"I think that the president contributed to this significantly", said Rep. James Clyburn of SC, the No. 3 House Democrat.

On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that it continues to process evidence and "to assess the potential motivations of the single shooter".

Two other victims - US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner who was shot in the ankle, and lobbyist Matt Mika who was shot in the chest - also remain hospitalised.
