6th district voters head to the polls: Election Day timeline

6th district voters head to the polls: Election Day timeline”

Ms Handel, the 55-year-old former secretary of state for Georgia, beat Democratic hopeful Jon Ossoff in the race for the congressional seat in Georgia's sixth district following Tom Price's appointment to Trump's cabinet.

Jon Ossoff's longshot dream of flipping an historically Republican congressional district has ended in failure - despite a massive effort by Democrats to send a humiliating message Donald Trump. Democrats are seeking to take control of the House, dominated 238-193 by Republicans before Tuesday's vote.

The 2012 race for Florida's 18th district used to be the most expensive House race. Judy Woodruff talks to Amy Walter of The Cook Political Report and Tamara Keith of NPR about the special election face-off.

Returns from absentee and early voting show the tight race that is expected in Georgia's 6th Congressional District, where Republicans are trying to stave off a major upset ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

The district has been red for almost 40 years, but Democrats were hoping that this seat - which represents the wealthy Atlanta suburbs - would be the first of a trend of taking over the House.

In the weeks since then, Republicans sought to characterize Ossoff as a creature of the liberal elite, tying him to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and also made much of his support from Hollywood figures.

In the case of Ossoff the extra ads arguably contributed to fatigue, which might have depressed his vote totals.

Ossoff gained national prominence by vowing to "make Trump furious", but lately he has avoided mentioning the president, promising instead to cut spending and "bring accountability to Washington", as he said at a Monday campaign event.

Ossoff received much more than Handel when it came to individual contributions, although most of it was also from out of state.

Republicans prevailed there - but by a substantially slimmer margin than had been anticipated.

That outside help has been one of the focal points of attacks by Handel, a former secretary of state who was the Fulton County Commission chairwoman, the most populous area of the district.

"These men, these statesmen, have created very very big shoes to fill and I will do my level best to live up to the standard that they have set", she said.

And frankly, if you look at the vote totals in Georgia, and another special election on Tuesday in SC, it's now four straight special elections where Democrats have done dramatically better than back in November. She noted last week's shooting of Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and said politics has become too embittered.

"Democrats from coast to coast threw everything they had at this race, and Karen would not be defeated", Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan, of Wisconsin, said in a statement.

Vice President Mike Pence attended a fundraiser on her behalf, while Trump wrote tweets in support of her candidacy.
