Colorado startup lands dozens of orders for the supersonic airliner it's developing

Colorado startup lands dozens of orders for the supersonic airliner it's developing”

The startup's passenger plane is created to fly 2.2 times the speed of sound, making New York City to London flights just over three hours long.

The company wants the plane in the skies by 2023 but is first developing a smaller supersonic jet to test the technology.

Boom said at the Paris Air Show on Tuesday that it also aims to shuttle passengers from San Francisco to Tokyo, gate-to-gate, in 5.5 hours, against. the current 11-hour travel time.

"We now have everything required to build history's first independently developed supersonic aircraft-the funding, technical design, and manufacturing partners", said Scholl.

Denver, Colorado-based Boom is now building a small, two-seat supersonic plane called the XB-1 Demonstrator, also known as the "Baby Boom".

Scholl said five airlines had ordered the planes, including Virgin. And a business-class ticket from NY to London will could cost US$5000, Boom estimates, far less than the US$20,000 charged by Concorde.

BBC News reports that Concorde tickets used to cost up to about three times that amount.

Denver-based Boom Supersonic is strengthening its strategic partnership with Rescale to leverage the power of cloud high-performance computing (HPC) for design and optimization of its new supersonic passenger jet, the company said. If the project appears to stall or no longer makes long-term financial sense, airlines might well cut their losses and bail out before production is complete. The European aircraft Concorde, which ended its transatlantic supersonic flight in 2003, was never commercially viable, and with airfare at $20,000, appealed to only a very narrow slice of travellers.

There are also some travel limitations.

Because of these concerns, many other countries, including the United States, do not allow supersonic commercial flights over land.

The five airlines committed to buying aircraft from Boom have paid non-refundable deposits, which will help boost the startup's bottom line as it works on a final design for the XB-1 Demonstrator and continues to strength-test components. "Today we've got better aerodynamics, new materials, better engines, and all that adds up to a 75 percent reduction in operating cost", he said.

And as for coach-airfare seats, they wouldn't be economically feasible for Boom to offer with the first wave of these planes, the spokesman said, but the company could in the future.
