Mobb Deep's Prodigy dead at 42

Mobb Deep's Prodigy dead at 42”

Prodigy broke out on the hip-hop scene alongside his Mobb Deep partner in Havoc in 1992, when they released their first music under the name Poetical Prophets.

Despite being a veteran of the game, Prodigy was still active in making new music.

Johnson met fellow Queens, New York native Kejuan Muchita when they were both freshman at Manhattan's High School of Art and Design. Their final album together was 2014's The Infamous Mobb Deep, a double album comprised of old and new material.

Two of Mobb Deep's albums - The Infamous (1995) and Hell on Earth (1996) - are considered critical successes.

Along with having an extensive catalog of albums, from "The Infamous" to "Blood Money", Prodigy's lengthy album list (before and after going solo) doesn't match the things he's done in the past that we will always have a place in Hip Hop history. Fans were looking the duos unique perspective on life and not for radio friendly fare. "So I think that pissed Tupac off a little bit".

It was also during this time that Mobb Deep became heavily involved in the east coast/west coast rap wars.

In 1999, the group released its most successful album, "Murda Muzik", which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. With his notorious "Shook Ones Pt. II" and several other tracks, Prodigy's uncompromising flow allowed him to emerge as one of the sharpest lyricists of his time. He also collaborated last year with Kathy Iandoli on a cookbook, Commissary Kitchen, a collection of recipes he conceived of while serving a three-year sentence for gun possession charges.

According to TMZ, Prodigy's sickle cell anaemia - which he has battled since birth - flared up due to the extreme desert temperatures, and he was forced to pull out of a meet and great following Saturday's gig. Nas posted a photo of the late rapper on Instagram with the caption "Family".

Stars including Lil Wayne, Talib Kweli, Ciara and A$AP Rocky took to social media Tuesday to mourned Prodigy's passing. [Prayers] to and for his fam. Love.
