Phil Mickelson splits with caddie Jim 'Bones' Mackay after 25 years

Phil Mickelson splits with caddie Jim 'Bones' Mackay after 25 years”

In one of the most stunning announcements in the game's recent history, Phil Mickelson and Jim "Bones" Mackay have split after 25 years.

Mickelson won five majors and 41 PGA Tour titles with Mackay - nicknamed "Bones" - on his bag. Mickelson said. "Our decision is not based on a single incident".

In respective statements, both Mickelson and Mackay reference the caddie passing on his "veto". Entertainment has been littered with popular double acts through the years, and Phil and Bones were the most enthralling and recognisible example within golf. I will always be grateful that I was around to witness so much of Phil's career.

Mickelson's brother, Tim, will carry the bag for the five-time major victor for the remainder of this year.

Mickelson's last event with Mackay was the St. Jude Classic earlier in June where he finished in ninth place.

Mickelson skipped last week's US Open in Wisconsin to watch his daughter's graduation from high school instead.

"After an fantastic 25-year run, Phil and I have mutually chose to go our separate ways", Mackay said in a statement.

"Player-caddie relationships don't often last that long".

"I wish Phil nothing but the best", said Mackay. "It was so cool to have a front-row seat", Mackay said.

Mackay was holding the flagstick when Mickelson took his leap of joy on the 18th green at Augusta National when he won his first major in the 2004 Masters. Mickelson wasn't able to make it, but Bones' attendance at Erin Hills shows there was nary a sign at the time that this move was coming. Mackay was back on the bag for the final two rounds. Amy and I, and our children, will always think of Bones, Jen, Oliver, and Emma as family.

The only tournament victory Mackay missed came in 1991, before they knew each other.

"The first time I ever caddied for him was at U.S. Open qualifying in Memphis, and he was an amateur", Mackay said.

Mickelson also added lightheartedly that Mackay had not yet used his famous "veto" this season, and that vetoes are non-transferable. We are looking forward to sharing life and friendship with them forever. I would like to pass it along to Tim, in all its glory.
