Police raid home of Brussels attack suspect”

Belgian soldiers have shot dead a Muslim suicide bomber after a small explosion echoed through the central train station in Brussels Tuesday evening.

A unit for the removal and destruction of explosive devices was also deployed to the station, according to the Twitter account of the Brussels police.

The person shot is considered a suspect after explosion-like noises were heard at the train station prompting authorities to swarm the area.

"People were running away", he said. A police command vehicle and several officers were still at the station, an Associated Press photographer said.

"I would put him at about 35 years old". The inner city borough has a large immigrant population and was home to some of those involved in Islamic State attacks on Paris and Brussels in 2015 and 2016.

The suspect came from Molenbeek and the suitcase he had partially detonated on Tuesday was full of nails and small gas canisters, the Belgian federal prosecutor's office was quoted as saying by Efe news. On Monday, an armed man was killed in Paris after he rammed a auto loaded with weapons and explosives into a police convoy on the Champs-Élysées.

Belgium suffered another shock last August when a machete-wielding man shouting "Allahu akbar" attacked two policewomen in the industrial town of Charleroi, before being shot dead. The attacks on Zaventem airport and the Brussels metro were claimed by ISIS.

Federal prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt told reporters some three hours after the incident that a small blast was being treated as a" "terrorist attack.

"Certainly, the assailant wanted to cause a great damage", the spokesman said. "The bag exploded twice but it could have been a lot worse".

He said the man had not been wearing a suicide belt.

Security was high around Brussels rail facilities Wednesday the morning after a man blew up an explosive device at the city's Central Station in yet another attack this week in a European capital. "The military reacted quickly and successfully neutralized the terrorist". The country increased security measures around the country following Tuesday's incident.

The blast in Belgium came a day after a man mowed down Muslims near a mosque in London, and a suspected Islamist on a terror watchlist rammed a auto laden with weapons into a police vehicle in Paris, reported AFP.

Ms Van Wymersch said medics were unable to attend to him for several hours out of fear he could be carrying explosives and his death was only confirmed once a bomb squad had finished its work.
