Tech CEOs to Visit White House; Kushner Speaks

Tech CEOs to Visit White House; Kushner Speaks”

The meeting with almost 20 chief executives comes as the White House pushes to shrink government, cut federal employees and eliminate regulations.

As we reported earlier today, Tim Cook was among a handful of tech executives who met with President Donald Trump today in Washington D.C. The central goal of the meeting was to help use technology to cut costs and further modernize the United States government.

"While the government is responsible for providing services for citizens, private industry has the luxury of being able to provide truly specialized user experiences, " the White House document said. Those using abusive language or negative behavior will result in being blacklisted on Disqus.

Others attending include Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Chairman John Doerr and the CEOs of Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N), Intel Corp (INTC.O), Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O), Oracle Corp (ORCL.N) and Adobe Systems Inc (ADBE.O).

But Trump and tech have long maintained an icy relationship, most recently battling over the president's decision to withdraw the USA from an global climate agreement. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he would leave three presidential councils over the decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Opening the day's events, Jared Kushner - one of Trump's top advisors - emphasized that the government's tech troubles are legion. Still a third group focused on high-skilled immigration, a major flashpoint for Trump and the tech sector.

Cook, Bezos and others have since been vocal critics of some of the administration's policies, including the attempt to institute a travel ban for visitors from some majority-muslim countries.

White House officials believe the administration could save $1 trillion over the ten year by implementing substantial cost cutting on IT, improving IT, and taking advantage on the government's buying power and reducing fraud across the government.

The executives are part of the so-called American Technology Council that Trump formed in May to support efforts to modernize the USA government.

Trump's meeting with the tech CEOs is expected to last for four hours. He also discussed a recently announced plan to overhaul the veteran medical records' system by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. "We're going to change that with the help of great American businesses like the people assembled".
