Acura Sends NSX, 500-Horsepower TLX A-Spec To Conquer Pikes Peak

Acura Sends NSX, 500-Horsepower TLX A-Spec To Conquer Pikes Peak”

Following an impressive performance previous year with a near-stock NSX and an all-electric version, Acura is returning to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and this time it's bringing not only the NSX but also its latest baby, the TLX A-Spec.

The 500-hp TLX is based on the 2018 TLX A-Spec.

The TLX GT, driven by long-time Acura race vehicle driver Peter Cunningham in his Pikes Peak debut, will compete in the Pikes Peak Open class, while Honda R&D engineer Nick Robinson, coming off victory in an NSX in last year's Pikes Peak Time Attack 2 Production class, will drive a 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec that will make its racing debut in the Exhibition class. Honda R&D engineer and Nick's brother, James Robinson, will drive a production-based NSX with GT3-inspired modifications in the Time Attack 1 class. The Acura contingent will include two racing versions of the TLX, plus an NSX racer. Taking lessons learned from the TLX GT racing program, the kitted-out TLX uses revised rods, pistons, camshafts, and an altered valvetrain.

The power comes from a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 and is routed to the front wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip differential. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of the oldest continuously-run motor sports events, and one of the most challenging. It also has a carbon fiber front splitter, a big rear spoiler, and an interior stripped of all amenities to save weight.

While the TLX A-Spec is modified for racing, Acura's other TLX Pikes Peak entrant is a bona fide race auto.

Finally, Acura is gunning for another class victory with the NSX. Like last year, the Time Attack 1 NSX will be driven by James Robinson, brother of Nick Robinson, the driver of this year's TLX A-Spec racer. Last year, Robinson piloted the 2017 NSX to victory in the Time Attack 2 Production class.

This is the "baddest" TLX A-Spec in existence, and it's running in some very good company. I drove 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec in Louisville, and loved it! The engine software also has been specially tuned to better prepare the hybrid system for the taxing task of climbing 14,115 feet. The race auto he'll be driving also features a twin-turbo V-6 though drive is now routed to all four wheels. Honda Performance Development tuned it for improved turbo operation with different boost pressures to deal with the lower levels of oxygen.
